Your undergraduate GPA is still important! Most banks, including bulge bracket banks and elite boutiques, still consider GPA during recruitment and expect it to be featured on your resume. These banks often filter candidates based on GPA, typically favoring those with a GPA above 3.5. To catch the attention of investment banking recruiters and hiring managers, it’s essential to display excellence both on paper and in person.

If you aren't commercially aware, you won't last in banking / finance careers. Don't just read the news. Have an opinion. Let's go through an example. The news story: Investment banking revenues are up for Wall Street banks. Citi (60% increase), J.P. Morgan (fees grew by 50%), and Wells Fargo (investment banking revenue rose by 38%). Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley are expected to report strong earnings next week, driven by increased M&A and capital markets activities. Concerns: Potential impacts from upcoming elections and interest rate changes. If you want to stand out you should use my ASA (Ask Search Ask) framework: 1. Ask yourself "So what?" (use the 5 points below) 2. Search for the answer (use Google or ChatGPT) 3. Ask yourself "So what?" again. This is straightforward, but not easy. The more iterations you do, the more developed your answers become. Doing this helped me form strong opinions and talking points to use during my interviews, internships and when networking. Here are some thoughts / opinions on the news story you can practise with (use each as a starting point to carry out further research): 1. Economic Indicator The improvement in investment banking revenues is a positive indicator of economic recovery and increasing market confidence. "So what?" It shows that businesses are engaging in mergers, acquisitions, and capital market activities, which are essential for economic growth. "So what?"... 2. Cautious Optimism The cautious tone of bank executives highlights the need to be aware of external factors like elections and interest rate changes that can significantly impact financial markets. "So what?" It underscores the importance of strategic planning and risk management in investment banking and the broader financial services industry. "So what?"... 3. Sector Performance The disparities in sector performance, especially the subdued IPO activities across the mid-cap tech sector, reflect ongoing challenges in the market. "So what?" It’s crucial for investors and financial institutions to adapt to these nuances for sustained growth over the long-term. "So what?"... 4. Role of Regulatory Environment The emphasis on regulatory impacts indicates the critical role that government policies and global economic conditions play in shaping the financial landscape. "So what?" This interaction between policy and market behaviour is a key area to keep an eye on. "So what?"... 5. Future Prospects The expected strong earnings for Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley suggest robust future prospects for investment banking. "So what?"... --- Boost your commercial awareness and accelerate your career for free here: https://lnkd.in/eHT7ePf2 Follow me, Afzal Hussein, for daily posts on finance and banking careers. #Finance #Banking #Students #Careers

😪 Breaking into investment banking is tough, with an industry-wide acceptance rate of less than 2%. One major mistake students make is having a poorly formatted resume 📃 Consider this: as an investment banker, you'll spend a significant amount of time formatting documents. 🤷♂️ So, what does it say about you if you can't even format your own resume properly? For example, one common error we see in many resumes is not using bullets to list achievements. ❌ In our opinion, this is a big no-no. ✅ If you want your resume and LinkedIn profile reviewed by our mentor, join the WSO Academy waitlist now - https://lnkd.in/gN9yH8gM #investmentbanking #wallstreet #financecareers
