A little bit of a difference as I found out about the history of AI 🧠📓 The journey of artificial intelligence (AI) has deep roots, starting with ancient myths and stories of intelligent beings created by master craftsmen. The foundation of modern AI was laid by philosophers who likened human thought to the mechanical manipulation of symbols. This intellectual groundwork led to the invention of the programmable digital computer in the 1940s, a machine embodying the principles of mathematical reasoning. Inspired by these ideas, a few visionary scientists began contemplating the creation of an electronic brain. The formal field of AI research was established during a landmark workshop at Dartmouth College in the summer of 1956. The attendees, who would become pioneers in AI, confidently predicted that human-level intelligent machines would emerge within a generation, securing significant funding for their ambitious projects. However, the complexity of creating such machines was greatly underestimated. By 1974, criticism and political pressure led to the U.S. and British governments halting their support for undirected AI research, marking the start of the "AI winter," a period of reduced funding and interest. A brief resurgence occurred in the early 1980s, driven by a Japanese government initiative, but funding waned again by the late 1980s as initial excitement faded. The 2020s marked a turning point for AI. Investment and interest surged as machine learning advanced, fueled by new techniques, powerful computing hardware, and vast data sets. This era saw AI being successfully applied to numerous challenges across academia and industry, revitalizing the field and driving unprecedented progress. Launching the new research project SMARTEST! https://lnkd.in/ecbj2bBX Starting this month and for the next two years at the Dipartimento di Filosofia Università degli Studi di Milano, Università degli Studi di Messina and Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche we will be investigating ontological, epistemological, and formal analyses of relations of copy, replica, and other counterparts of physical artefacts for the digital twin vision in industry, and in particular for probabilistic systems as they are implemented in AI technologies. Strengthening and extending current research, we will offer a philosophical and algorithmic analysis of properties and their verification to guarantee the reliable transfer between a digital artefact and a physical one. #ai #digitaltwin
