#WaterWiseEU 🔊 FIEC EU has become Ambassador of the 🆕 #EU campaign running under the slogan ‘See water differently’ We partner with EU Environment and Climate (ENV) and are among the Ambassadors of the "Water Wise EU" campaign promoted by the European Commission. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the increasing stress placed on Europe’s #water systems and to spotlight the many available solutions to tackle issues related to water. Download the KEY MESSAGES of the campaign: https://bit.ly/4bRFUks The campaign was formally launched at the #EUGreenWeek on water resilience, which took place on 29 and 30 May, and will last until the end of September. It was officially opened by the EU Executive Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič . "(...) Circularity must be at the heart of integrated water management. We need a ‘water efficiency first' principle to reduce demand – and water that is not used, cannot be wasted. Reusing #waste water, giving it a second life in agriculture, cities, energy production, or industrial processes, can help reduce the pressure on water supplies (...). With this ‘WaterWiseEU' campaign, we want to build a new consensus on longer-term measures and define an inclusive and comprehensive trajectory for the EU to achieve water resilience by 2050. We will need everybody on board in this work, and an innovative approach, if we are to achieve this. So I invite you not only to take part in the discussion, but also to spread the word wherever you go." - said EVP Šefčovič in his keynote address (read full statement: https://bit.ly/3yNbjFX). FIEC EU is a strong supporter of the idea of a #EuropeanBlueDeal, as it believes that more water resilience is urgently needed in the EU. At the EU Green Week, the European Commission and the Belgian Presidency of the Council of European Union stressed that the water cycle is broken and that more investment in water resilience is needed in the next EU budget. The incoming Hungarian Presidency stressed that water is not only a natural resource, but also a social and economic resource, and that investing in water means investing in industrial #competitiveness. 🌿 EU Green Week 2024: Building a Water Resilient Europe 💧 This week, we had the privilege of attending EU Green Week in Brussels, where the pressing issue of water resilience took center stage. As Europe grapples with recurrent water-related crises, this edition of the annual conference focused on what is needed to make the EU more water resilient, both today and in the future. Key Discussions and Takeaways: 💡 Fostering a Water Smart Economy: A central theme was the development of a water smart economy within the EU. As Europe warms at twice the rate of other continents, it's imperative to act now. A water smart economy is pivotal for achieving water resilience and supporting the green transition. 🔄 Restoring and Safeguarding the Water Cycle: Panelists emphasized the challenges of restoring and safeguarding the disrupted water cycle. There was a unanimous call for integrated water management strategies to address these challenges effectively. 🚰 Ensuring Access to Clean and Affordable Water: Ensuring widespread access to clean and affordable water, along with adequate sanitation, was highlighted as a fundamental priority. Discussions included the necessity for international water cooperation to address global water demands, which are expected to outweigh supply by 2030. 📘 Advocating for a Blue Deal: Several speakers advocated for the next European Commission to prioritize water in policymaking through a proposed Blue Deal. This would involve creating a dedicated Directorate-General (DG) and Commissioner focused solely on water, moving beyond its current environmental silo. Such a shift would require the EU to go beyond its competencies, reflecting the socio-economic dimensions of water. 🔧 Legislative and Policy Revisions: At the EU level, there was consensus on increasing the availability of affordable and safe water. This includes a future revision of REACH and a reduction of PFAS to ensure water safety. 🔬 Promoting Research and Innovation: All panelists agreed on the critical need to support further research and innovation in the water sector. High water use industries must be aided in reducing their water consumption to enhance overall water resilience. 📢 A Call to Action: The clear message from EU Green Week participants is that Europe must become a global leader in water management. This involves not only internal actions but also global cooperation to tackle the impending water scarcity challenges. Our team at the Trade Mission of Israel to the EU remains committed to closely monitoring regulatory and policy developments in the EU. Yesterday, the entire value chain of water – from supply and abstraction to usage and production processes – was gathered here at Ramboll Head Office. I had the pleasure of opening by affirming that the EU is our ally in sustainability. I stressed the ticking clock the EU is facing as a water crisis looms. This threatens a vibrant ecosystem, a thriving economy, and a sustainable industry. And did you know that industries in Europe account for 50% of the total annual abstraction of water? To better manage our precious water resources, we must adopt a coherent, cross-sectoral, and cooperative approach 💧🔄 Europe must be a union where everyone always has access to drinking water and is protected from flooding. But it begins and ends with water – it's the nexus of our challenges. Whether we are discussing climate adaptation, energy issues, establishing offshore wind farms or Power-to-X production. Fortunately, Ramboll is already addressing this agenda with our clients. So yesterday, we launched a report on behalf of GRUNDFOS. This report finds that we can save between 50-75% of all the water used in light industries. So proud! #Estonia is the most environmentally friendly country according to the Environmental Performance Index compiled by Yale University and Columbia University. Come and visit us, we are not greedy and like to share our good fortune with others! Our rise to the first position among the 180 evaluated countries is due to notable reductions of emissions in the energy sector. The Environmental Performance Index ranks 180 countries based on 58 indicators. The indicators are grouped into three main categories: ecosystem vitality, environmental health, and climate change. Earlier this year, the 2023 World Air Quality Report ranked Estonia second in Europe between #Iceland and #Finland in air quality, making us one of only seven countries in the world with clean air. The results of this report confirm that Estonia is not only a pioneering digital society—there is also a strong societal and political will to make the most of the ecosystems developed to tackle decarbonisation and become a leading player in CleanTech and GreenTech. #VisitTallinn #VisitEstonia #CleanEnvironment #CleanAir #ClimateChange #EnvironmentalHealth #EcosystemVitality #EnvironmentalPerformanceIndex
Recently ranked as one of only seven countries in the world with clean air, #Estonia now also tops the Environmental Performance Index, bolstering the country’s ambitious #sustainability goals.

🚨 New CSRD Reporting Requirements: A Boost for EU Carbon Projects? 🇪🇺 Attention companies impacted by the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD)! New regulations are coming into effect, requiring you to disclose the portion of your carbon credits derived from EU-based projects (as a percentage of total volume). This is mandated by Article 62 of the ESRS E1 standard, a delegated regulation supplementing the CSRD (see link below!) ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dMNhscJ9 While European carbon projects, particularly nature-based solutions, might currently be less common (and potentially more expensive), this new rule has the potential to be a game-changer! Why is this good news? Boosts EU Project Funding: This regulation incentivizes companies to invest in carbon reduction projects within the EU, promoting local solutions and potentially fostering innovation. Geographic Proximity, Environmental Benefit: Supporting projects closer to home can streamline logistics and communication. Additionally, prioritizing EU projects can ensure alignment with stricter European environmental regulations, potentially leading to greater biodiversity co-benefits alongside carbon reduction. Case in Point: #FincaAliaCredits The project restore the Iberian Lynx habitat, benefiting from a carbon credit project in western #Spain that promotes habitat restoration. This exemplifies the potential for EU carbon projects to deliver a double win for climate and biodiversity! What do you think? Is this a positive step towards more impactful carbon contribution? ICYMI: UN Environment Programme released their 2023 Annual Report last week. The report showcased substantial progress made in implementing environmental programs across the planet, but particularly in climate-vulnerable developing countries. Of particular note, result-based financing valued at US$1.5 billion for UN-REDD Programme projects helped 17 countries to conserve and restore standing forests. While 2023 represented significant gains, the report also emphasises the substantial work still required to support adaptation and mitigation efforts in the pursuit of a 1.5C world. #FAQs Our clients often ask about the most recognized standards for carbon credits. Today, we're thrilled to share the answer! There are numerous carbon standards used by emission reduction and removal projects to ensure credibility, but the most recognized ones are: Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) One of the world’s most widely used #GHG crediting programs that drives finance toward emission reduction and removal projects. VCS was developed by Verra, an organization founded in 2007 by environmental and business leaders who foresaw the need for greater quality assurance in voluntary carbon markets. Headquarters: Washington, DC, USA Gold Standard (GS) Introduced by the Gold Standard Foundation, GS is a certification standard for carbon offset projects that is widely regarded for its high environmental and social criteria, deemed as the highest standard. Other than contributing to climate action, GS projects are also aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (#UNSDGs). Headquarters: Geneva, Switzerland Global Carbon Council (GCC) A voluntary carbon offsetting program that aims to help organizations reduce their carbon footprint, help the sectoral economy to diversify by adopting low-carbon alternatives, and catalyze #climateaction on the ground. Headquarters: Doha, Qatar Plan Vivo A certification body that certificates projects under the Plan Vivo Carbon Standard (PV Climate) and the Plan Vivo Biodiversity Standard (PV Nature). PV Climate is a framework, developed with over 25 years of experience, tailored for community and smallholder land-use and forestry projects. Headquarters: Edinburgh, New Zealand Cercabono A voluntary carbon certification program that facilitates and guarantees the registration of Climate Change Mitigation Programs of Projects (CCMPs), the certification of emissions, and the registration of carbon credits generated by these initiatives. Headquarters: Medellín, Antioquia, Colombia Puro Standard The first carbon standard for carbon credits that is based on the the number of carbon removed from the atmosphere and stored long-term in carbon net-negative processes or products. By using science-based methodologies, this standard is dependable for precise compensation of emissions.
