Community Risk Reduction in Active Senior Communities Data collected by the United States Fire Administration indicates that adults over the age of 65 are 2.5 times more likely to die in a fire, and adults age 85 and over have the highest relative risk among the general population of dying in a fire. Proactive efforts through relationship building, educational initiatives, demonstrations and resident inclusive emergency planning are a must within these communities. The successful implementation of Fire Warden programs in multi-tenant structures is key to maintaining regular participation and stake holder involvement. Utilizing Fire Wardens during evacuation drills and emergency responses to conduct resident accountability checks and the establishment of muster points provides enhanced coordination with first arriving units. If you have these communities within your jurisdiction, reach out and establish a productive line of communication. The benefit to both residents and responders will prove invaluable.
