Great work as Project-based learning starts to gather momentum here at Turriff Academy.

In 1995/96 Curtis Wong, while at Corbis, hatched an idea to bring the Barnes Foundations gallery to computers on desktops everywhere. What was fascinating about this early iteration of something we are now calling the Metaverse or whatever verse, is that the building the collection was housed in was a critical part of the experience. Barnes had curated one of the greatest private collections in the world to that point and purpose built a home for it in suburban Phillidelphia. Unfortunately the stipulations in his will, post death, were reatrictive about allowing the works to leave the gallery. This became the core principle of the project. ACCESS. How could kids, students and art lovers from around the world see this truly magical collection of impressionist masterpieces? So he went about creating one of the most highly praised CD Roms ever that put users in the gallery, free to roam and dig deeper through primary thru tertiary layers of information and context about each work…right down to invoices. The project was so successful, he brought it to Intel thru Art Museum dot net that enabled a similar idea of access only through connected networks and then with PBS, Gateway and Ken Burns with Frank Lloyd Wright the Poetry of Structure. The how’s and technical details were less important than the design idea…make art, architecture and information about both as available as possible to people all around the world…no matter their socio-economic conditions or ability to visit sites. These projects are being retread with abandon and technologists will have us believe that it’s a brave new world. As always, the greatest predictor of the future is the past.

Exciting News from STEM to the Future We're thrilled to announce that we've received a generous grant of $77,560 from the LA County Department of Arts and Culture! This fantastic support allows us to further champion the 'A' in STEAM – integrating Arts seamlessly with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Our journey into the world of STEAM is not just about equations and experiments; it's about identity, creativity, and community. Take, for instance, our recent project that blends identity and artistry. Inspired by LA's own visionary artist Dakarai Akil, our students explored the realms of Afrofuturism and Black surrealism. Through his work, they delved into a profound cultural narrative that extends beyond the canvas. Each child creates a personal collage, transforming ideas into visual stories. This exercise was more than just an art lesson; it was a self-discovery process, a conversation starter, a tool for expression. By embracing the 'A' in STEAM, we teach our young learners that ideas can grow into tangible outcomes - be it art, a brand that raises awareness for marginalized communities, or a garden to nourish their community. We are immensely grateful for this grant as it acknowledges the importance of art in education and reinforces our commitment to providing a holistic learning experience. This is just the beginning! I'm thrilled to announce the completion of a fascinating project, the Bentley Eastern-Western Aesthetics Database (BEWAD) http://bewad.bentley.edu BEWAD is a meticulously curated collection of numerous paintings from different parts of the globe which serves as a vital resource for exploring various domains such as art perception, neuroaesthetics, empirical aesthetics and provides a robust foundation for studying the intricacies of artistic appreciation across cultures.
