Tenet - Christopher Nolan 70MM IMAX Regal 20 Opry Mills, Nashville One thing most people don’t like doing is sitting to close to the screen at the cinema. Imax, like the storyline in Tenet, is the inverse of this as you want to be in rows three or four from the front so the screen fills your entire field of vision and the bass washes past you as it careens to the back of the auditorium, slams into the rear wall and rolls over you again before disapating. The first time I saw Tenet, in March of 2021, I was on a flight with 34 people on a 300 seat plane flying from Doha to Sydney to quarantine in a hotel in Haymarket for 2 weeks. It was a confusing time and Tenet’s unanchored plot was the perfect film for that flight. I watched it again today for only the second time and this time in 70MM IMAX as intended. Time is a recurring theme in Nolan’s filmography and while Tenet made more sense this second time around it still felt unanchored and maybe thats the point. The conversation about Oppenheimer felt alive this time around, perhaps influenced by seeing that film in this same IMAX in 70MM last year. I am becoming a very big fan of large format cinema. Tenet is for me one of Nolan’s less clear works but none the less spectacle on a grand scale, a progression maybe, granted in a much larger scale, of the themes within his much earlier work Memento. Well worth revisiting this one if you get the chance and if you see it in 70MM you might get three frames to take home 🤷♂️.
