Context is King This week I met with Alberto Franceschi, a PhD student of mine who works at Juventus Football Club. A good portion of our meeting was me asking him about the structures in place at the club in terms of staffing and departments. Alberto is a great student, and I'm sure a great practitioner but it's important I understand the kind of environment he works in. This cultural understanding is different from club to club and there can be even bigger differences as we look from country to country. An understanding of such differences is important when looking to optimise practices on the ground. In a few weeks in our High-Performance Sport MSc Liam Anderson PhD will be speaking about some of his experiences of working in different organisations, and in different countries. If we truly want to be impactful, we have to consider this kind of detail. I'm sure it'll be a great session and another great example of the experiences from Graduate School of Sport and Professional Practice staff feeding into our curriculum. Great talk, thank so much, Robin Matthews 🙌🤩 Tracing your journey and offering tips/advice that you’ve learned along the way was invaluable knowledge for the cohort. My key take home points from your talk for the students to consider in their early careers were: don’t settle for being average, always strive to do the best job possible; don’t shy away from the crappy roles/tasks; create and utilise contacts at every opportunity; and don’t be afraid to fail - you have to put yourself in a position to learn…and sometimes the best learnings come from errors. Excellence is a product of consistence . Different sports men are devoted to breaking big world records in the sports industry and this gives them satisfaction that they outpass historical records and set the bar high but the question that is usually asked is that do these great sportsmen break the records for the first time in the fields ? These great historical record breaking are ofcourse not overnight sensations but results of exceptional devoted spirit , consistence , focus and optimal discipline . A ten minute show of historical record breaking takes thousands of hours of training , failing and trying until exceptional excellence is attained . This is applied to professional excellence and becoming guru in any field that it is anchored on dedication, discipline and continued learning to become top notch talent that would drive institutions beyond records .

𝟭𝘀𝘁 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗮𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲⁣ ⁣ 🎓 𝗔 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿: 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 🎓⁣ ⁣ The first year of high school was an incredibly fruitful year for me. Despite having a very tight schedule, thanks to extraordinary organization and planning, I managed to finish with a final total grade of 10, obtaining the 𝗛𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 and the 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱. These grades could be the best in Spain, in the Science category. In addition, I won the 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲 𝗔𝘁𝗵𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 again. 🏅⁣ ⁣ However, I didn't get the treble as I missed out on the 𝗙𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 by just two or three votes. Still, it was a well-deserved award for the one who received it, and I couldn't be happier about it.⁣ ⁣ 🏃 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝘆 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀: During this course, I kept up all the activities I was already doing: refereeing on Saturdays, going to my great-aunt's house on Saturday afternoons to help her with my great-uncle (my godfather) and his grandchildren on Sundays, player on the El Prado school's 11-a-side youth football team on Sundays, private tutoring two or three days a week, 11-a-side football training twice a week, my own daily exercise routine, daily mental training to keep my “speed reading” and my mind agile, visiting my grandparents weekly, helping my classmates with their studies, etc. 🧠⚽⁣ ⁣ There are always things left unsaid, either by oversight or on purpose. ⁣ 📄 𝗔𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝗗𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: I attach in this post my grades and the letters received, among others. So many people are talking about 4th place not getting enough appreciation. And quarter-finalists not being talked about enough. And Round of 16 participants... Look, let's write to the International Olympics Committee, ask them to fix their mistake. Stop giving medals to only the top 3, right? Give medals all the way down till Round of 16. What do you think? People who watch sports regularly and implement learnings in daily life know better. 4th place is but a hope of getting in the top 3 next time. And so is top 8, and top 16. Beyond that, it doesn't matter. Don't get me wrong, that hope is a BIG deal. And it needs support. Isn't that how life works? Ask the UPSC aspirant who missed a rank by 3 marks or the startup founder who wasn't 100% on the day of the pitch. If you missed it by a whisker, better luck next time. More importantly, be better next time. It's not fair. It's not fair to water down the achievement of the podium finishers. They were tactical, focused, persistent and simply better than the others. Let them, and only them, shine in their moment of glory. Let everyone else become background noise, and a hope.
