The story on the front page of today’s Kalgoorlie Miner is a great piece by Carwyn Monck to help promote a project being run in the Goldfields-Esperance District to educate the community on the importance of being properly prepared for regional and remote travel. As we looked at ways to create opportunities to promote our key messaging, the local 4WD course run by the district training team stood out as the perfect opportunity. From a logistics perspective, it meant we were able to use an activity that needed to be run anyway and use it to value-add to the project. From my perspective, it was the most efficient and effective use of resources to deliver the desired media opportunity and outcome. I am always mindful of ensuring the best balance is achieved between creating effective media opportunities and taking police officers away from core frontline duties to be involved. Yes, engaging with the media and the community is an important part of policing, but it is still important to consider the best way to achieve that. In this case, the outcome was achieved without any impact on existing rostering and frontline duties.
