Fire suppression is one of the reasons that longleaf pine, which once covered 90 million acres of the southeastern United States, has dwindled to approximately 5 percent of its historical range. This week is National Invasive Species Awareness Week! Our team has been working to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species in Adirondack waterbodies for nearly 25 years. Working across the Adirondack Park, our team of 100+ Watercraft Inspection Stewards are vital to efforts to educate others about the impacts these organisms can have on aquatic environments. You can help us protect against aquatic invasive species by following these simple steps: Clean all boats and equipment used when recreating. Plant fragments, seeds, or animals such as zebra mussels could be trying to hitch a ride. Drain all boat compartments of any standing water to prevent small-bodied organisms from getting transported Dry boat, boat components, and equipment. Sunlight and a lack of water makes it difficult for organisms to survive. #NISAW #NISAW2024 #InvasiveSpecies

Fish are cold-blooded, meaning their body temperature regulates with the surrounding water. They breathe through gills, extracting oxygen from the water. Fish are an essential food source for humans and wildlife, providing protein and nutrients. They also play a crucial role in maintaining aquatic ecosystems, helping to maintain the balance of their environments. From the tiny guppy to the massive whale shark, fish are a vital and intriguing part of our planet's aquatic life.

Very grateful for the opportunity to contribute with a Colombia deep dive on the latest WWF's report on the global state of forests. Led by the incredible work of Mary Gagen and several of our WWF colleagues across the world, the Forest Pathways Report is a needed call to action that details the shortcomings of the current forest pledges and financial commitments across the world, as well as providing an outline of principles that can better guide forest decisions. Amongst several recommendations, it also signals the need to "implement existent global forest goals instead of creating new commitments, focus on the ones we have with high ambition and accountability, tackle the systemic threats to forests, deliver the financing needed, and national policy and action in line with global commitments". Thank you to my WWF Colombia colleagues for their contributions to this case study that highlights the lessons from Colombia's forests in their pathway to a lasting peacebuilding process.
