Whenever I played sports during my school days, I always loved being a captain... The feeling of making decisions, choosing your team, handling the responsibility and making peace with the losses! The thing I loved the most was choosing my teammates. We all always have that one friend we can count on, don't we? The person who might not be the best player ever but just having that one in your team gives you a sense of calmness and strength to take on difficult moments in the game. I have now understood that this applies to all the teams (even outside sports). My team has such key players. That colleague who might not have everything figured out but just having him/her by your side gives you a sense that you can meet the deadline, you can talk with senior client team members, you can solve x, y, z, etc. While having that player by your side is important, being that player for someone is equally (if not more) important. Former American Football Coach Vince Lombardi often emphasised the importance of making "The Second Effort" highlighting that success, whether in football or sales, often demands going beyond the first attempt with even greater determination and persistence. Each setback should ignite a renewed commitment to persevere with even more resolve. This principle was the focal point of a 1968 sales training tape featuring Lombardi. Although the film is short (25 minutes) and very basic in nature, it has been used by countless coaches, including the legendary Jack Gibson, who once cancelled training at Kogarah to show it to his team. The result? An unbeaten 7-game streak that led them to the 1971 Grand Final, where they narrowly lost to South Sydney, 16-10. If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend watching it, with several implications for leaders across industries. This year, the Bulldogs have fully embraced Lombardi’s "Second Effort." Both on and off the field, our staff have gone the extra mile, demonstrating grit and an unwavering commitment to excellence. I am incredibly proud of them all—across every department, the entire club has embodied this relentless pursuit and a refusal to settle for anything less than our best. Having just played our annual slopitch tournament this past weekend, it made me reflect on the similarities of building teams both in sports and in companies. Tom Webster CPA, CA, ICD.D once used the analogy of building a team/department like you would build the Canucks lineup. Being a sports enthusiast, I realized how important it is to ensure you have the right mix of skills and experience to build a championship sports team as well as a high-performance team. From my perspective it's important to have the high potential rookies working closely with and learning from the wiley experienced veterans. It's important to have those with specific technical skills (i.e. the skilled player), excellent communication and soft skills, and leaders. And of course, a great coach/leader to guide the team, bring the best out of them, and help elevate their performance. When you have a diverse team who collaborate towards a common goal, you have a winning team. So what would your 'championship' team look like?
