The politicization of the response to Helene and later Milton has provided a recruitment opportunity for white supremacist groups who have assembled in devastated regions that government emergency services have struggled to reach as part of a recruitment drive and PR effort. FEMA has also long been a target of unfounded anti-government conspiracy theorists – especially on the US’s far right – going back more than a decade. The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday that white nationalist groups, including Patriot Front, had joined recovery efforts in Florida and in the Carolinas. An X post from western North Carolina read: “We in Patriot Front are here to help out the local communities … Our politicians can hem and haw and switch over quickly to their talking points about Israel, but we truly are supporting our communities and being America first.” A Guardian report from 2020 described people in Corbett, Oregon, being stopped at armed civilian checkpoints and asked to identify themselves during wildfires, sparking a debate about vigilante activity and how law enforcement should respond." - Edward Helmore / The Guardian Key takeaway: That FEMA workers are having to be evacuated from some of the areas hardest hit by Helene and Milton, because they're no longer safe from right-wing vigilante groups, is both heartbreaking and disgusting. Enough. I can confirm the accuracy of this Politico article via two additional sources, one first-person and one second-person. The acting Commander in Chief refused federal aid to wildfire victims because the disaster occurred in a “Blue” state. He scrawled a denial in red sharpie on the cover of a disaster declaration compiled by hundreds of emergency managers over thousands of hours. This action is disqualifying, unethical, unpatriotic, indefensible – and simply un-American. The same subject is responsible for the injury of 140 law enforcement officers on January 6, 2021, and for current violent threats to responders putting their lives and health at risk to assist victims of Hurricanes Helene and Milton in so-called “Red” states. News flash – real responders don’t care how or if victims voted. We roll up our sleeves and get to work. After many, many private conversations with homeland-security and emergency-management professionals, we must state clearly and publicly: this subject is a direct threat to the national security of the United States, and is utterly unfit for any federal office. True safety professionals – all of us – need to be resolute as we demand better for our nation. Enough.
