The Untold Challenges of Being a Music Manager: What You Don’t See Being a music manager is a role that many see as glamorous, but the reality is far more complex, especially when working with emerging artists. My journey has been filled with challenges that have shaped me into the professional I am today, but the work is far from over—this is a continuous learning process. One of the most unforgettable moments in my career was selling the very first gig for Thype. For small artists, booking gigs is incredibly tough. It requires persistence, negotiation skills, and a deep understanding of the market. This is just one aspect of the many challenges that come with the territory. Another critical but often unseen part of my job is keeping the artist motivated when things aren’t moving as fast as they’d like. When the career feels stagnant, and nothing big is happening, it's my job to keep them focused, encourage them to continue creating content, and remind them of the bigger picture. The reality of being a manager involves handling a lot of the day-to-day tasks that many don’t see—things like scheduling, negotiations, and strategizing social media content. These might seem small, but they are essential in freeing up the artist's time so they can focus on what truly matters: creating music. Every challenge, every obstacle we’ve faced, has been a learning experience. But I’m still on this journey, still growing, and still pushing through the challenges that come our way. My work isn’t finished—far from it. For any artist reading this, know that having a manager isn’t just about signing deals; it’s about having someone who believes in your potential, who handles the behind-the-scenes work so you can focus on your art. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the industry’s demands, remember you don’t have to do it alone. Let’s continue to grow together, learn from each challenge, and make sure the music reaches where it deserves to be. #MusicManagement #ArtistSupport #MusicIndustry #EmergingArtists #LearningJourney #BehindTheScenes #MusicBusiness

Do musicians need a manager? Deciding whether musicians need a manager depends on various factors such as their career stage, operational complexity, and business acumen. Managers can significantly aid musicians by handling time-consuming administrative tasks, leveraging industry connections, and negotiating favorable contracts. They provide strategic career guidance, manage marketing and publicity, and oversee tour logistics, allowing musicians to focus on their art. However, in the early stages of a career, musicians might manage independently until their operations grow more complex. A DIY approach suits those who prefer control over all aspects of their career or face financial constraints. Additionally, the rise of digital platforms has made self-management more feasible for many artists. Alternative support structures include business managers for financial tasks, booking agents for performance opportunities, publicists for media relations, and lawyers for legal matters. Ultimately, the decision hinges on the musician's specific needs and circumstances, with a manager being invaluable for some, while others thrive independently or with a tailored team.

You need a good amount of self belief with a healthy dose of delusion to get results in K-Pop songwriting and production. If you have come from another musical discipline or genre, you need to work from the (almost) ground up and match the level of writers who have spent years writing and pitching for these groups. Whatever genre or discipline you are most experienced in, you can always tell who has been doing it longer right? Don't get me wrong though, you NEED this way of thinking. That confidence and delusion at the beginning is crucial to actually start the thing you want to do, but consistency and discipline over a long period of time is what gets the results you want. I 100% did this when I moved from from orchestral scoring into K-Pop / Pop production. I had that level of delusion needed to start and yeah, there were similarities, but nowhere near the level of mastery required to match those who had been doing it for years. I would say it's unlucky and almost a curse to land a result first time as the luck will eventually run out, and you’ll spend a long time trying to get back to where you were at the start. Consistency and discipline with a bit of luck always works! Always looking to write and pitch to new A&Rs, brands and publishers. Let's talk in the DMs! #kpop #musicindustry #musicproduction #songwriting

When working with a producer communication is key! Though keep in mind a good producer will also be able to work with you to achieve the sound you’re looking for, whether or not you’re not familiar with the exact vocabulary! A couple tips: 1. Be Specific We all have different terms that come to mind to describe sounds, keep in mind there is no wrong way to communicate your ideas and all information is valuable! 2. Reference Tracks Referring to an existing recording to recreate a sound or style is a great way to go, this does not mean copying something exactly - lots of songs have a similar basic structure, groove, feel, sound that can be a starting point for creating something new and unique. #musicproduction #communication #producer #artist #songwriter #recording #groove #sound

Michael has been a vital part of the Multi-Media family for over 10 years in the Cape Town office, working tirelessly as an audio tech previously then moving into the role of Senior Project Manager. His ability to coordinate large-scale events with precision and excellence ensures that every project runs smoothly from concept to execution! Michael takes his story of his audio journey back to his upbringing...When asked how he reached his current level, he takes us back to how it all began; “My dad was how it all started. He always played in bands, so I was always around music A LOT. We always had a drum kit in the house, I grew up around that. There was always music." It’s inevitable that Michael’s ears have a natural inclination to music and sounds and is eminent that he would always be connected to it professionally or otherwise. It was his mother however who made the suggestion in high school that he pursue a career in sound, in her words “Well, why don't you go be a sound guy and you go work on the cruise ships, you’re young and you could travel the world?" With this in mind, he pursued the schooling part, but never got to do the cruise part. Instead life went on a different path that led him to Multi-Media, which has been his residence over the last 10 years. He freelanced for Multi-Media for about three/four years until one day he took the offer for a permanent role. When asked how he pivoted, he mentions it was a natural evolution. "After doing this for a few years, you start getting to know other departments and clients and how the big picture is built holistically and how the elements weave in together. Managing a Project is not only about putting the physical resources together but includes the human capital necessary to make the project work and leading the team. “It's understanding what everybody else can do and making sure to push people within their own boundaries“ We asked him what his favourite project he’s worked on so far? And Herbalife was top of the list. He relates that the Extravaganza is a showcase, it's big production with massive sound, lots of lights, high energy… so there's a lot of scope to be creative. “I can play music when I when I feel that the crowd needs a bit of music and even in the middle of someone's presentation, if there's a moment one can capture and translate it through music, that is how magical moments are created." With Michael being married with 3 kids, we asked him how he balances work and life because eventing can be quite a demanding career, he mentioned that he makes sure to section life such that when he is with the family, he is focussed on them and is a present father and husband. Michael’s journey is testament to the power of passion, persistence and adaptability. His deep connection to music and sound, instilled in him from a young age has served as a foundation for his professional life while ensuring creativity and client satisfaction has made him an invaluable asset to the company.
