🎮 New Blog Post: "Black Myth: Wukong | Reflection: From a Game Design and Playtesting Perspective" Black Myth Wukong has been a phenomenal hit—at least to me, who grew up in a Chinese cultural context. While it has a few flaws, it's not far from being a masterpiece, and I was a bit sad to see it didn’t draw as much attention among my Western network, so I’m excited to share my latest blog post analyzing its game design! I applied Jesse Schell's renowned playtest technique to dissect this highly anticipated title. In my review, I focused on 4 of the 6 key questions (FFWWDD) from Jesse's method: - What was your Favorite moment? - What was the most Frustrating moment? - What would you change if you had a magic Wand? - Was there anything you Wanted to do but couldn't? These questions helped me reflect deeply on the game mechanics, my player experience, and potential solutions for improvement. It's the same approach I always use when hosting playtests for my own games, providing valuable insights from both a player's and a designer's perspective. Update - Black Myth: Wukong has now sold an estimated 17 million units. It's been almost 2 weeks since Black Myth: Wukong launched on Steam and we wanted to give it the attention it deserves. By now, it's sold c. 17 million units on Steam alone, making it already the best selling game on Steam this year. 🌏 - 76% Chinese audience 2 weeks after launch. This figure was over 80% during launch, but the Western audience has caught up a bit since as a result of all the media attention. 🙏 - Over 4 million wishlists pre launch - this wasn't an unexpected success. This was highly anticipated 🎮 - Players of this game, unsurprisingly, skew heavily towards Asian games with the top 3 highest overlapping games being Asian ⏱ - The game has achieved a remarkable 27h average playtime in just 2 weeks. People spend some serious time in the game! 🌟 - 96% positive ratings reflects the fantastic graphics of the game. More importantly, it demonstrates the nationalistic level of support to the game by its Chinese audience.
