Playing to Win: Why Rugby League Should Tackle Its Core Business First Morning! 👋 As a die-hard Rugby League fan and someone who's dabbled in marketing, I've got a bone to pick... I need to talk about why our beloved sport needs to focus on its core business right here in the UK: the heartland of the sport in the North of England. 1. The Scrum of Core Business: Rugby League, like any good team, needs a solid game plan. And that starts with the core. In business terms, the core is like your star player—the one who scores the tries and keeps the crowd roaring. For Rugby League, that means nurturing grass roots clubs, engaging a community of fans and ensuring the heart of the game beats strong along the M62. Forget expansion for a moment; let's tackle what's already on our home turf. 2. The Conversion Rate: FMCG Brands vs. Rugby League: FMCG brands know this drill. They've got their flagship products—the ones that fly off the shelves faster than a winger chasing a kick. But sometimes, they get starry-eyed and they think, 'Hey, let's launch a new flavour of crisps!' Meanwhile, their core product—the OG plain salted crisps—feels neglected. Result? Fans grumble, sales drop and the brand loses yardage. 3. The Sidestep Trap: New Markets and NPD: Expanding into new markets or launching NPD is like executing a sidestep move. It's flashy, it looks cool, but timing matters. Rugby League, too, has sidestepped into new territories—London, Europe, even Mars (okay, maybe not Mars). But if we're wobbling at home, those sidesteps won't lead to tries. We'll end up like a player doing a pirouette while the opposition scores. 4. The Golden Boot: Balancing Core and Expansion: I'm not an anti-expansionist nor am I anti-NPD BUT you have to get your own house in order before expanding; as any great athlete will tell you, the key to peak conditioning is a strong core. In Rugby League this means getting fans back into stadiums, improving the national teams and showcasing the best of ourselves when televised; in FMCG it means having a clear and strong proposition with a consistently great UPSPW and great consumer reviews. 5. The Final Whistle: In the scrum of business, the final whistle isn't blown until we've secured our core. So, let's chant it together: 'Core first, expansion second!' 🏉 Remember, my fellow fans, whether you're in the stands or the boardroom, the game plan matters. Our rugby specialist, Will Thompson, breaks down why this deal isn’t all doom and gloom, and could actually be the game-changer rugby in England so desperately needs: 🏟 This deal is reportedly worth more than £100m over 10 years, a staggering figure in rugby terms that will see record numbers invested in the grassroots game and professional clubs. After a difficult few years since Covid, the RFU are keen to avoid any more pain. Fans, players, and key voices in the media have been calling out for the desperate need for investment, and this is the answer. 🏟 This investment will also provide vital funding into the professional game and senior teams, particularly enhancing growth in the women’s game with Allianz already title partner of the Premiership Women's Rugby 🏟 With that, Allianz is a known sponsor of rugby across the world, so it feels an authentic and genuine partnership 🏟 The press release from the RFU mentions ‘improving experiences’ at the stadium too, essential in bringing Rugby HQ into the modern day with a stadium that attracts new fans to generate more revenue, which forms a huge part of the funding for the whole English game; multiple routes to the station might be a start... 🏟 The other alternative at one stage was selling Twickenham altogether and merging the Home of Rugby with the Home of Football – yes Wembley! So we were relieved this deal means our iconic home remains 🏟 Accusations of Twickenham ‘selling its soul’ are somewhat naive, as these types of investments are exactly what every other mainstream sport has done to survive and grow. And just as people still affectionally call Wembley Stadium Connected by EE simply ‘Wembley’, The Kia Oval simply ‘The Oval’, Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium simply ‘Murrayfield’, and the DHL Stadium ‘Cape Town Stadium’, Twickers will always be Twickers to rugby fans After what’s felt like years of ‘what do we do’, this deal feels like the first huge step towards growing and changing the game this nation loves so much. #Rugby #Twickenham #AllianzStadium #RFU

The idea of the National Rugby League (NRL) purchasing or merging with Rugby Australia is a significant proposition with potential benefits and challenges. Here are my first 5 reasons why such a move could be advantageous for both codes. 1.     By merging with Rugby Australia, the NRL and RA can consolidate resources, administrative staff, and marketing efforts, leading to more efficient operations. Only the very best people will be employed across the merged entity. 2.     With a broader portfolio of rugby competitions under its umbrella, the new entity will be able to negotiate even better broadcast deals, ticketing revenue, sponsorships, merchandise agreements and betting arrangements thereby  increasing revenue streams. Coordinating the schedules of rugby league and rugby union competitions would minimize overlap and maximize the availability of top-tier rugby matches throughout the year. This would help avoid fixture clashes and ensure a more consistent viewing experience for fans. 3.     A merger would create a more cohesive player development pathway from grassroots to professional levels, streamlining talent identification. Pooling resources for player development programmes would lead to a more robust talent pipeline for both Rugby League and Rugby Union. Shared expertise and infrastructure would benefit both sports. It will be a nightmare for AFL. 4.     By offering a diverse range of rugby experiences, from rugby league to rugby union, the combined organization would attract a broader fan base. This would lead to increased attendance at matches, higher television ratings, and greater overall engagement with the sports. 5.     A single governing body for both rugby league and rugby union in Australia would streamline decision-making processes and improve overall governance. This would lead to greater accountability and transparency within the sport.
