Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15 by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402. September 15 is a day of significance because it is the anniversary of the independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively. Happy Juneteenth! To quote John Albuquerque, "Let's make Juneteenth a commemorative, not of the horrific institution our country embraced, but rather as a showcase of the strength in the American spirit to recognize wrong and set about making it right ... Let us celebrate all that Juneteenth teaches us about our country's greatness in our use of the heart to hear and to learn and to work together for all that is good and just." What we currently know as Black History Month started as Black History Week. This was brought into existence through the invaluable contributions of Carter G. Woodson, a renowned figure. In 1915, he initiated the foundation of 'The Association for the Study of African American Life and History,' previously known under the title 'The Association for the Study of Negro Life and History.' A year later, developing upon his remarkable efforts, he introduced 'the Journal of Negro History', which is presently recognized as 'the Journal of African American History'. #blackhistorymonth #cartergwoodson #blackhistoryweek #africanamericanhistory #blackhistory #associationforthestudyofafricanamericanlifeandhistory #journalofafricanamericanhistory
