How would you approach a community? (this story would make you laugh 😂) A particular organization recognized a community that was in need of clean water, so they decided to construct a borehole for the community without getting permission from the community leaders After a while, the organization came back to the community, to see if the community members were using the bore hole and to measure the progress of the project. They found out that the borehole was never used and the community members still go to the river to fetch water(which was very unhealthy) When the organization approached the leaders to ask why…..they replied, “did you speak to us first before doing anything or did you get our permission”. Apparently, it wasn’t like the community leaders did not appreciate their effort but the location where it was built was the problem🥲 They said the location where it was built, would not allow husbands to have fun with their wives and that is why they like to send their kids to the river to get water which is farther from the community…..so they can use that time to have fun with their wives😂 {Let’s say you want to impact or carry out an implementation in a local community} You have to face the formality of any new community you want to impact… We call this, COMMUNITY ENTRY VISIT…. This visit ensures that you meet the head of the community, its leaders (Obas, traditional and religious leaders) and other respectful individuals. In this visit, you talk about what you intend to do for their community, how you want to carry it out and the necessary support you require from them. Ensure you fully understand what they would agree with and what they wouldn’t.. Remember, it is their territory not yours What is your experience when visiting a local community for the first time? #publichealth #communityimpact #projectimplementation #120dayslinkedinspree

The success of your first visit determines further progress on that project

😂😂😂 as funny as this story is, there’s something important to learn which is courtesy. Because how will you go and start a project in a community without seeking for the necessary permission?

My experience with communities while working as a field officer were wonderful. We payed a visit to a community in Pategi LGA in kwara state. We were welcome in a loving way and after the meeting with the elders in the community, they arranged some goodies and even gave us a bag of rice and a matured goat.

Advocacy visit is key to any project implementation and success. If you don’t carry the community leaders, state and government leaders along, sorry for you. It’s either they frustrate your efforts or disregard your efforts. They are the frontlines when it comes to any state or local level projects. Not carrying them along is more of boycotting the process of project implementation and the end results is not usually favorable

The role of community participation in community development. Most projects stall as a result of social issues.

You have to visit the community head as part of the project work to inform them of the project and also note if it will be welcomed or not. Or else the community settlers might be the ones that will disrupt your projects. Faith Ibitoye.
