Do you like shrimp? Or are you a fan of Pink Floyd? Today's science post is for you. Pistol/ snapping shrimp can create a crustaceous cacophony, using a weapon that is louder than a gunshot, and hotter than the sun's surface. They have a large claw which is their super weapon. The shrimp can open the top part of the claw, and allow some water into a small chamber in the crook of the claw. It clamps down, a small plunger in the top claw forces water out of the chamber, and it creates bubbles that speed out at almost 100 kmph. The bubbles pop can be up to 210 decibels. (an actual gunshot is up to 175 dB). This process is called cavitation. The bubble bullets don't harm anything directly, but the shockwave stuns the prey. As an added bonus, the bubble collapse can briefly create temperatures of up to 4500 degrees celcius. An added bonus for Pink Floyd fans- there's a pistol shrimp called synalpheus pinkfloydi, named so because it's weapon-claw is pink coloured.
