"How very little can be done under the spirit of fear" ~Florence Nightingale This quote resonates deeply with me, especially as I reflect on the challenges facing #nurses today. Fear, in the form of #impostersyndrome, #burnout, or even just the daily pressures of the nursing profession, can hold us back. It can make us question our abilities, our worth, our intelligence, our strength, and even our right to have a #voice. I've been there. Heck, I'm kind of there right now! I often notice that "why me?" feeling creep in. But then I remember this quote, and I challenge that mindset with a powerful question: "Why NOT me?" Why not me to speak up about better working conditions for nurses? Why not me to advocate for improved patient outcomes? Why. not me to push for policy change? Why not me to lead, to innovate, to inspire, to use my VOICE? The truth is - we all have a unique set of skills, experiences, and perspectives. But, when we allow fear to silence our voice, we rob the profession of our valuable contributions. And when we question our own worth, we diminish the power of the collective #nurse voice. Remember, we are stronger together. We can change the future when we collaborate, #innovate, and encourage one another. The future of nursing depends on it. I was recently asked by a colleague why I'm involved with the Commission for Nurse Reimbursement. At first, it was a curiosity. But, last October, my 22-year-old daughter was hospitalized for viral meningitis, and the hard realities of the current nursing environment came to life in front of me as the family of a patient. As nurses, we've all faced the heart-wrenching decision of whether or not to let our loved ones stay in the #hospital alone. It's not that we don't trust our colleagues, but we understand the harsh realities of a cost-minimization #healthcare system. The pressure to discharge #patients quickly, understaffing, and the focus on efficiency can sometimes compromise the quality of care. We've seen firsthand how easily things can be overlooked, how vital information can get lost in the shuffle, and how patient needs can fall through the cracks. That's why we feel the need to be there, to observe and advocate for our loved ones, to ensure they receive the attention and care they deserve. It's not about protecting them from the nurses but from the potential pitfalls of a system that isn't always patient-centered. We're not just nurses; we're #caregivers, #advocates, and protectors. We're the ones who understand the importance of being present, of asking the right questions, and of making sure our loved ones aren't just another number in the system. This is my "why" for the advocacy work I've leaned into over the past year.
