Feeling grateful for our wonderful #WindsorPark neighbors this week. We know that it is difficult for small businesses to make room for philanthropy, so we are extra thankful for their ongoing generosity and support. 😻 Big thanks to North Mass Boulder, Day Won Fitness, Digs Garden Center & Heath Outdoor LLC, Indianapolis Film Project Inc./Kan-Kan Cinema, Stomping Ground, The Indianapolis Public Library Spades Park Branch, Centerpoint Brewing, 8th Day Distillery, and Fowling Warehouse. I am curious as to what makes RowCal special considering how they managed my community. They charged us over $8,000 for project coordination and nobody knows what it was we got for that money. I wouldn't think that they would treat their employee's much better than they do the communities they manage but I can only speak for my community. Here what others are saying: https://lnkd.in/gSFM62dC You can't make this stuff up. One reply I found from Rowcal I found particularly amusing was their social media policy which I find bothersome coming from an industry that customer service is priority. "We understand your frustration, ***** and assure you we take all resident feedback seriously. However, it's important to clarify our social media policy. While we encourage open communication, we do not allow non-productive, negative comments that do not offer specific details about an issue that can be addressed. This allows us to focus on remedying genuine concerns and keeps our social media pages a positive space for all residents." I do not believe RowCal understand this person's frustration or cares about it for that matter. Most people do not get online and complain unless they have a good reason to. By the way RowCal people have the right to speak out about how poorly they are treated by your company. RowCal does not have any right to hide it from people and turn homeowners into the problem when in reality, they are the problem.
Did you know that earlier this year RowCal was named a Great Place to Work? 🎉 We’re thrilled to share that 88% of our employees say RowCal is a Great Place to Work! We pride ourselves on a culture of teamwork, innovation, FUN, and a commitment to excellence in HOA management. From fun team bonding events to leading charitable initiatives, we love fostering an environment where our employees feel empowered, valued, and connected. Curious about what makes RowCal so special? Humbled to speak last night The Walrus Talks, where I had the opportunity to discuss a topic close to my heart: rethinking philanthropy. In my 20+ years as a fundraiser, I’ve seen how transactional philanthropy has become—too focused on short-term gains instead of long-term relationships and impact. But there’s a better way forward. I shared three key principles that I believe can transform the way we approach giving: 1. Use abundance as your guide – Trust in the abundance of resources, collaboration, and human potential. 2. Build honest relationships – Root philanthropy in truth, values, and trust that’s built to last. 3. Give without strings – Allow for flexibility and trust in those closest to the issues to lead. Big problems—like poverty, climate change, and the housing crisis—require deep, collective commitment. It’s time to break out of the silos, challenge short-sighted systems, and invest in people and solutions for the long haul. A huge thank you to The Walrus for having me, and to my fellow speakers Mitzie Hunter, Liban Abokor, Jess Merber, FEA, Jo-Anne Ryan, FEA, MFA-P, Jess Tomlin, Jo Kerr for sharing their incredible insights. Let’s keep pushing for radical, meaningful change together.

Through We Rise Together: For an Equitable & Just Recovery, we are learning about the outsized impact grocery stores have on neighborhood economies. We Rise Together, a collaborative of 160 funders led by The Chicago Community Trust, has supported some 40 real estate developments in long-disinvested communities since 2021. As these projects open, we’re learning about the impact of these places through a robust evaluation, another benefit of a collaborative funding model. With our evaluation partner Mastercard Data Services, we are seeing that grocers produce immediate and measurable impacts on total traffic to an area when they open and close. Closing a larger grocery store produces a further reaching effect than opening a smaller local grocery store. As more projects open their doors, we will continue to share what we’re learning through our ongoing evaluation. #Chicago #Philanthropy #WeRiseWednesdays

Check out the timelapse video of our CANSTRUCTION Build for the San Antonio Food Bank's 2024 competition! We were lucky to again partner with HDR this year to bring to life "Bluey and Bingo at the Beach." Over 4,000 cans went into this build this year. The cans will be donated to the Food Bank at the end of the month, and help bring awareness to September's Hunger Action Month. It's amazing watching a team come together and bring these builds to life. An incredible amount of work goes into these builds in order to make build day happen smoothly and in a matter of hours. Brainstorming ideas, researching can sizes and label colors, determining construction feasibility, creating the 3D model to map out layers, budgeting, organizing practice builds and working out problems, purchasing transporting thousands of cans, and ultimately creating a structure that will last a month in a mall - each of these steps share parallels with the work we do each and every day in the construction world. In the end it's all for charity and a volunteer activity, but it's impossible not to see the benefits of participating in these events as a professional. The best part about participating in these events you might ask? When the kids walking through the mall stop and yell out "It's Bluey and Bingo!" Already looking forward to 2025's competition. #JoerisGC #HDR #TransformingPeopleAndPlaces #CanStruction

It is always a pleasure to have my long-time friend Steven Dyme, CEO of Flowers For Dreams, join my DePaul Driehaus College of Business class this week. Steven spoke on his entrepreneurial journey and how social impact is woven into the fabric of Flowers for Dreams. A few fire takeaways and quotes: 🗻 Start small but think big—Begin with a focused product or service and scale up responsibly. Flowers for Dreams started selling flowers for graduations and has evolved into special events like weddings. 🏃♀️ Adaptability is essential — Steven started selling flowers from a cart at high school graduations. This evolved into a business with 3 physical locations that is thriving in its second decade of operations. ♎ Community and sustainability can drive profitability — Embedding purpose into your business can yield substantial long-term benefits. Flowers for Dreams contributes 25% of its profits to local nonprofits (Over 1.5 million donated). This continues to drive goodwill amongst the employees, citizens of the community, and all the F4D customers. More information on the foundation can be found here: https://lnkd.in/g3n6axBD ♻ Local impact — Focusing on local production and contributions can significantly enhance community engagement and sustainability. F4D continues to source all its flowers locally, building stronger ties with the entire supply chain. 😊 Don’t judge yourself too hard —Start tinkering, building, and moving forward.

The Toy Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Association, is a unifying force for good in our industry, and Anthony Trani, CEO of Elenco Electronics, Inc., put it best in this recent interview: "What better way for companies in an industry to come together than in making a difference to those in need?" #toyfoundation #toyindustry
"The Toy Association is a great way for different parts of the industry to come together... for common causes that impact the members and I believe a big part of that is corporate social responsibility," shared Anthony Trani, CEO of Elenco Electronics, Inc., the maker of SNAP CIRCUITS. We are The Toy Association's Foundation uniting the industry's collective philanthropy and delivering the power of play to all children in need. Thank you Anthony and ECRM's Joseph Tarnowski for talking about how community and philanthropy are essential tools helping grow the SNAP CIRCUITS business and are of value to the entire toy industry. Major gift expert and keynote speaker. Helping fundraisers and nonprofit leaders transform their fundraising so they can transform the world.
re: A small glimpse of our work from the frontlines of philanthropy For the last quarter-century, we've been right there with you, working on the frontlines of philanthropy. It's been an incredible journey, and it's shown us something truly remarkable: when philanthropy and brand unite, magic happens. When tearing down those old barriers and joining forces, the results are nothing short of spectacular. We have experienced firsthand this formidable partnership creating massive waves of fundraising and awareness that have propelled missions forward. These mission-moving results would not be possible without program participants and their families who courageously shared their stories and generously granted permission to us to share them. Some of the visuals and messaging in our body of work may evoke strong emotional reactions or discomfort for some viewers. If you feel that you might be affected by such content, we recommend proceeding with caution or choosing to view our work at a time when you feel more prepared. 👉 Take a look at a tiny cross-section of our work: https://bit.ly/3Ymt9KE

Quack, Quack, Quack! Did you know? … Ducks are very social creatures. They talk to each other by quacking, hissing, whistling, and grunting - and start to communicate while still in their eggs! There’s more fun facts where that came from. Stay tuned! #Fundations #StructuredLiteracy #ScienceOfReading
