There are a few people you meet in your professional life who have such a long-lasting impact on your journey and for whom you remain in close contact as you travel along that journey. These two women are definitely part of that "tribe" and I am so blessed to call them my dear friends. Lourdes Coss, MPA, NIGP-CPP, CPPO, Tammy Rimes, MPA and I have shared alot over the years. Each time we land in the same place, we pick right back up where we left off. We have created together, we have laughed together, we have shared some of the most painful parts of our lives together...we have always been there to share a quiet moment of sorrow, an amazing victory, or endless laughs over wine. When you find the right people, great ideas grow. I am proud that a conversation and an idea that we talked about many years ago, led to an intentional discussion about women in executive leadership roles. That grew into a published article about Women in Procurement, then facilitating over a dozen panels of women leaders from across the county (where we added even more women to our journey), to what today has exploded into a social network of over 1,000 women from public sector procurement (thanks to two other dear friends that joined our journey, Ginny Justiniano, NIGP-CPP, CPPB and Stacy Gregg). Today, the #ProcurementWomenLeaders network continues to connect women from across North America in procurement who are leaders in their own communities, to share, to grow, to laugh, to learn....most of all, to be present for each other. Never underestimate the impact and power of a conversation and an idea among friends who share a common experience...that brief moment could lead to something that could impact so many more lives. And even better, when that idea leads to others' ideas...and a movement begins. Ladies, never underestimate the power and impact of your ideas and your experiences. Reflecting on the power of women and their pivotal roles in corporate leadership 💁♀️ Of course it's not about waiting for March 8th to acknowledge this — it's a conversation we should have every day. Ok ok, truth be told, I just messed up and didn't make it in time :) I have an excuse tho. I decided to take an extended break, learning the art of not constantly proving myself or draining my energy dry. It turns out, the most innovative ideas and effective solutions often emerge when we pause, recharge, and switch perspectives. Added to my list of must-reads: Nellie Borerro’s Unwavering! Female leaders bring innate characteristics and points of view to the table and — coupled with the unique experiences that make them them — have the potential to bring immeasurable value to their organizations and teams. Yet so many of us get stuck toeing the line between what society expects from us and the true badasses that we are. I’m keen to read more on the pervasive challenges Borerro’s book brings up, including: -Using overly gracious and accommodating language vs. being confident and sincere. -Being apologetic for the justified opinions and insights that we have. -Shying away from promoting our abilities and accomplishments. -Not advocating for our professional development. If any ladies want to join a book club discussion on this one, let me know! These challenges aren’t unique to women, but they’re certainly common amongst us. In the meantime, I highly recommend Toni Raiten-D’Antonio’s less business-oriented The Velveteen Rabbit Principles for Women to help unleash the “Real you.”

The Shocking Truth About Female Leaders: Women represent 1 in 4 C-Suite leaders. Women of color 1 in 16. A new report, just out today shows: — More women leaders support a more inclusive environment — Only 24% of women leaders have had a formal mentor — Women were 12% less likely than men to receive leadership skills training — 67% of executive/C-suite women leaders reported having P&L responsibility, vs 79% of men Women leaders drive growth and impact across every organization. And we are more ambitious than ever. Support women by: — Providing equal pay  — Offering more flexibility  — Providing access to growth  — Fostering mentorship opportunities  — Stopping the stigma around working moms Today, I’m spending the day at a Mentoring for Women event. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate International Women’s Day than in the company of women leading change.

According to McKinsey and LeanIn.org, it will take 22 years for white women to reach parity with men in leadership roles in corporate America. For women of color, it will take nearly 50 years. I am not sure about you, but for me, this is unacceptable. How are we using our superpowers as leaders in the industry to impact and change this disparity?
