Did you know? A child's risk of developing myopia is influenced by their parents' vision. With two myopic parents, the chance is 1 in 2, while one myopic parent lowers it to 1 in 3. Even without myopic parents, there's still a 1 in 4 chance. This data underscores the importance of early intervention and education. At our office, we're proactive about identifying potential patients by informing and educating families about myopia risks. We also offer a variety of treatments to slow its progression in kids, ensuring a clearer vision for the future. Curious to know if you're at risk? Seattle Children's is giving new hope to epilepsy patients with a cutting-edge procedure called responsive neurostimulation (RNS). This innovative treatment involves placing a battery-powered device in a patient’s skull to detect and stop seizures. Dr. Stephanie Randle and Dr. Jason Hauptman highlight that RNS is a game-changer for children who haven't found relief with other treatments. Seattle Children’s is the only center in the Northwest offering this advanced option, showing promising results with significant seizure reductions for many patients. When was the last time you had your eyes checked? This week is World Glaucoma Week run by the World Glaucoma Association. Glaucoma is the leading cause of preventable blindness. The aim of the week is to alert everyone to have regular eye and optic nerve checks to detect glaucoma as early as possible because there are available treatments for all forms of glaucoma to prevent visual loss. So come on gents, book in to get those eyes checked if it has been a little while, especially those who do not need glasses. If your optometrist bulk bills, Medicare will pay for: one eye test every 3 years, if you are under 65 years. one eye test a year, if you are over 65 years. **Purpose:** Refractive error is a leading cause of childhood visual impairment, with early detection crucial for preventing conditions like amblyopia and strabismus. **Patients and Methods:** We conducted a prospective observational study on 683 children aged four to 10 years, using a direct ophthalmoscope to analyze the red reflex and crescent characteristics. **Results:** The presence of superior crescent correlated with hypermetropia, while inferior crescent correlated with myopia. The test showed high sensitivity in detecting hypermetropia and could quantify refractive errors. **Conclusion:** The modified Brückner test offers a simple, quick, and effective method for detecting and quantifying refractive errors in children. It's ideal for community screening to identify potentially amblyogenic refractive errors. 👁️ #VisualImpairment 🧒 #PediatricRefraction 🤓 #BrucknerTest 🌈 #RefractiveError 📊 #ScreeningTest
