Geospatial Data: Transforming School Parking Management Addressing the pressing issue of parking around schools, councils are increasingly turning to innovative solutions powered by geospatial data. As parking problems continue to increase nationwide, councils grapple with the delicate balance between accommodating motorists and safeguarding pedestrians amidst the growing demands for kerbside space. Of particular concern is the rise in dangerous parking near schools, jeopardizing the safety of children and pedestrians alike. Increasing instances of vehicles encroaching on zig-zag and double yellow lines not only hinder visibility for drivers but also pose significant risks to those navigating the often crowded pavement space. In response, councils are pioneering novel approaches to combat these issues. For instance, Fylde Council in Blackpool undertook a trial using double red lines to address the problem head-on. Unlike double yellow lines, which are often disregarded by parents seeking to drop off their children conveniently, double red lines signify a strict "No stopping at any time" policy, making any form of stoppage an offense. Following a successful trial, the council is now expanding the initiative across the borough. While such measures effectively tackle one challenge, they give rise to new concerns regarding the availability of safe parking areas for parents and caregivers. To confront this, councils recognize the imperative of gaining a comprehensive understanding of the kerbside spaces they are tasked with managing. By embracing geospatial data, councils can manage school parking challenges effectively, ensuring safety and optimising kerbside space. In Northern Virginia there is so much pressure for data center development that plans for townhouses and apartments are being replaced by plans for data center development. What does this mean for the housing crisis? I’ve watched Loudoun build way too much luxury single family housing and way too little affordable, missing middle, transit oriented housing. Now we’ve got a change from just that type of housing we needed to keep and build to more profitable data center development. Land that was planned for residential that lies along the new 500kV that was supposed to add capacity for existing power needs in data center alley but instead is stimulating a change in development from residential to new data center proposals along Rt 7: https://lnkd.in/e8cuSpwf https://lnkd.in/eAbZx6Za Gainesville's Hillwood Camping Park slated for data centers https://lnkd.in/eAr4np2y https://lnkd.in/ewtSiPfm *Edited to reflect that this land was not “rezoned” but replanned.

As one of the cities embracing digitization and sculpted by HK government into prime location for data centres in Asia pacific, Hong Kong is facing a notable growth of data centres. Besides the open up of suburban area, reuse industrial building and redevelop industrial lots in city area as data centres are the common ways in Hong Kong to fight the shortage of land. When we are focusing on how to blend the outlooks of these data centres into the surrounding concrete jungles to make it less “dirty” and visible or adopting approaches to build them in sustainable way for environment. We rarely consider the potential of multi purposes and values of the data centres for sustainable neighbourhood. What if we turn the negative by-product (heat release, water pollution, etc.) of data centre into energy source for running built-in community facilities (swimming pool, playground, community lab, etc.) to enhance the community engagement. What if government imposes compulsory community benefits purpose as one of the conditions during granting land use right to private developers of data centres (just like compulsory public facilities within private development in HK). With the rapid AI development, fast evolving digitization and unique challenge of land scarcity, the urbanized data centres are unavoidable in Hong Kong; we need to rethink and redesign the value system of data centre from the views of well-being, society and environment while go beyond the current single functional value.
Data centers aren’t always dreary warehouses on the outskirts of towns. When integrated into mixed-use settings (think university campuses, retail, residential, etc.) these pieces of critical infrastructure can be embraced by neighborhoods. This will be one of the biggest data center developments in the world. "The Hanover Board of Supervisors has given the nod to a massive planned industrial project outside Ashland. Development company Tract on Wednesday secured the zoning approval needed to create a 1,200-acre data center park along Hickory Hill Road east of Interstate 95 in Hanover County. Tract Chief Investment Officer Graham Williams previously told BizSense that the company anticipated the project area would be able to support up to 9 million square feet of data center space spread across 30 buildings on multiple campuses. While the zoning application’s conceptual plan doesn’t outline a specific vision for the overall project, Tract representatives have said they expect that 10% to 12% of the project area’s acreage would be occupied by the actual data center buildings and associated facilities. The assemblage is divided into eight so-called building areas where data center facilities, accessory solar facilities, parking and other features would be situated. Building setbacks for the property would range from 150 feet to 250 feet, according to a staff report. The overall project would have about 450 acres, or 37% of the site, used as buffer and open space." https://lnkd.in/esPXe9Fx

Disclaimer- Tract has only purchased the land. The digital gateway in Virginia is minimum 6 gigawatts and build out is 23 million sq ft. Data Center Alley in Loudoun is 20 million sq ft and bringing power to that corridor means relying on coal and using eminent domain to take other people property for transmission line infrastructure . What is the energy plan for this campus? So three questions which should be easy to answer. 1)peak load demand 2)what is the generation plan 3)monthly water consumption
