It was amazing, even though my clothes were ruined—haha! The best part? No work talk, no gossip, no deadlines, just pure FUN. Last night was a heartbreaking end to an incredible run by the Georgia Bulldogs. Hats off to a gritty Alabama team that keeps finding ways to win. Regardless of last night’s results, Georgia is a great football team because it knows success isn't solely defined by streaks or setbacks. When asked about the Bulldog’s historic winning streak after they beat Tennessee earlier in the season, coach Kirby Smart responded, “I’m focused on Georgia Tech.” Like Kirby and the Bulldogs, real success is about staying focused on the next step and emphasizing one game at a time. I grapple with the same emotions in my own life: the elation of wins and the apprehension after losses. Yet, sustained success is about embracing setbacks, learning, and emerging stronger. In both football and life, it's crucial not to dwell on past victories or succumb to naysayers. Instead, give your best in each moment, each opportunity. Deion Sanders Jr was videotaping a Colorado locker room speech by Coach Prime and these were the two attributes that Prime preached to his team. A couple of weeks ago, I wrote a post about a high performing team in reference to the ALCS. Well, the high performing team that I referenced won the World Series last night! Congratulations to the Texas Rangers on their first ever World Series win! Tuesday Newsday… I spent last weekend with my Mom who turns 90 today. Yes, 90. She’s still spry for 90 and loves to go eat ribs and play 42. In fact, we played over 90 hands of 42 over the weekend to celebrate. I’m locked up yesterday and today in a strategy planning meeting. Looking ahead is a good thing. Then the work follows which keeps the paychecks coming and the company growing. Let’s go! Did I mention the Texas Rangers are WORLD CHAMPIONS? Spring training has sprung. Pitching is a question again. Injuries are a concern. All that to say, time to do it again. Let’s go Rangers! How often to situations come along that causes you to see the worst possible outcome? It’s somewhat common for people to imagine the worst. Now, consider the best possible outcome. What does that look like? Does it excite you? Does it make you dream bigger? You can’t win, unless you’re in the game. This stems from a conversation with Mr. Nick Puckett. I think I originally heard this version from James Clear. It also reminds me of Teddy Roosevelt’s “Man In The Arena.” There can be no victory unless you play the game. Get off the bench. Get out of the stands. Pick a team. Let’s do this. I get there also has to be a loser. That may happen. You may lose. With a possibility of losing lies also the possibility of winning. The more you lose. The more you learn. This isn’t about sports. This is that next job opportunity. This is that volunteer role. This is that committee you’ve been asked to join. This is that side hustle you’ve wanted to get off the ground. Last week I watched a team named the St. Paul Saints play a minor league baseball game while I attended the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) annual convention in Minneapolis. The Saints are a Triple-A minor league team who are affiliated with the Minnesota Twins and all of their players are working hard to get promoted to the Major Leagues. As I was watching this game, I realized there's lots of similarities between these minor leaguers who want to be major leaguers and many #inhousecounsel who aspire to be in #GeneralCounsel roles someday. In my latest #3Strikes video below, I provide these 3 tips on what you need to do to become a #GeneralCounsel: ⚾️ Understand the Business: GCs need to have a deep understanding of the organizations and businesses they support. The best GCs are highly fluent on their company's products, services, customers, partners, competitors and marketplace. ⚾️ Communicate with Impact: GCs need to be able to communicate in a clear and concise matter. The best GCs can explain highly complex legal matters in a clear and easy-to-understand manner. ⚾️ Get Better Every Day: If you want to become a GC, you need to constantly work at your craft, have a growth mindset, and improve every single day. Having grown up in the Larry Bird era, at my grandfather’s knee as he watched the TV broadcast of Boston Celtics games with Johnny Most’s radio call popping and fizzing out of his AM radio (the radio call is always better), I am a lifelong Green Bleeder. Even with the Sox and Pats’ success over the past 20+ years, the C’s have always been my favorite hometown team. And while there’s plenty to celebrate any time a team you care about wins a championship, I find myself feeling both notably proud and tangibly inspired by two particular facets of this squad: 1. Their resilience/willingness to learn from past failures, to grow, adapt, and achieve. Especially after last season’s ugly exit and a subsequent roster re-boot. And 2. The construction and composition of this roster, proof that combining players that FIT together, compliment one another, and bring team-oriented intangibles delivers more long-term value, especially in challenging situations, than the “Superstar Stacking/Big Three” approach. They are, in every sense, a true “team”, not unlike their mid-80s forebears. Many lessons to be learned here, personal and professional, to be sure.
