❌ 🙅♂️ This company is not the right place for you❗ There is little things in life that I perceive as more cringy than glofrifying your employer as holy heaven. Probably as inauthentic as people bragging on Linkedin that working from that random Indonesian Island bar is super duper productive and benefits the bottom line - what BS. Anyone telling me otherwise has only their own benefit in mind (Convince me otherwise) Why is it inauthentic? Because your employer will never ever be 100% aligned with what you want. Some people value stuff such as: ❌ coffee tonic from the barista in the office (What is that anyways?) ❌ ping pong table in the office ❌ [Insert any other unnecessary gimmick] (Sorry, we don't have this at TravelPerk) And you know what? This is fine, maybe this is not the right place for you. And are these gimmicks really that important? Is it a realistic and fair expectation towards your employer to hit that 100%? At the end of the day, these gimmicks are just precentiles on the scale that do not have any significant impact on how aligned you are to your employer. However, if you value to: ✅ Have a sense of belonging to something bigger ✅ Feel connected with your colleagues from all over the globe and work towards excellence ✅ Helping people to connect in real life Then TravelPerk might be a very relevant place to work for you. Granted, in my young career, I did not have too many employers yet, but the feeling of belonging always had the biggest impact on the alignment with my employer - and safe to say, TravelPerk does know of to make you feel part of something. "Way back in 2013, I began my trivago journey in the Display Email and Affiliate (DEA) team. Imagine being the newbie, the second hire, diving headfirst into the world of Performance Marketing. It was challenging, but also a lot of fun, especially with the international vibes buzzing around. As I sit in my new home office in Manila, Philippines, I can't help but reflect on the incredible journey that led me here from living in Hollywood Hills, California in 2023. It was a bold move, fueled by a desire for change and a book that challenged my entire perspective on work and life: "The 4-Hour Work Week" by Tim Ferriss. Ferriss's principles guided me to redefine success, prioritize efficiency, and embrace the possibilities of entrepreneurship and digital nomadism. In Manila, I've found not just a new geographic location, but a new way of living and working. Here are a few key takeaways from "The 4-Hour Work Week" that have become cornerstones of my professional and personal life in Manila: 𝐀𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Leveraging automation softwares, AI and outsourcing tasks to focus on what truly matters - creating value and pursuing passions.🤖 𝐆𝐞𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐫𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞: Living in Manila while earning in USD has not only optimized my financial reality but also afforded me a quality of life and freedom to start new projects, or just relax. 🌏 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐢-𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬: Life doesn't have to be a long march to retirement. It pains me to see Mr. Vinod Khosla and Mr. Narayana Murthi’s inclination over a 70-hour work week. I don’t see much point in the debate as it is quite clear enough: They are missing the point that one’s incentives to work are different when they are a) A founder b) A worker One common incentive could be: “I like what I do” which I guess is fine; in that case, 70 hours or even 100 hours don’t matter for either of them. A founder is effectively a businessman and their contributions are directly (mostly) linked with the profit/ROI of the company in which they have a stake. Putting in that extra 20 hours might give 100x additional returns. On the flip side, employees, while enjoying fixed salaries (and perhaps being spoiled by RSUs :P), operate within a different paradigm. Promotions may come faster, but they eventually encounter a saturation point. In my last 9 years, - At BlueStacks, my most cherished aspects are not the additional hours invested. But, the invaluable connections forged, the technologies mastered, and the memorable off-site experiences in places like Vietnam, the Philippines, and Thailand. These off-sites, with entire resorts dedicated to the company, unlimited food, and stimulating discussions, were truly unique. - Similarly, my time at Google isn't defined by the extra hours put in but by the incredible people, the enriching culture, the unparalleled opportunity to make a global impact, and off-sites too.
