Had a great time this morning discussing the results of our research study on adult learners who left (and some who returned) to Shasta College and College of Continuing Education (CCE) at Sacramento State with Project Attain and California Competes. We were hosted by Dakota Pawlicki, Director of CivicLab. Always happy to talk with folks who are trying to make higher education more accessible and doable for adult learners!

President and Chief Executive Officer, and Board Member, Education Forward Arizona. Helping students succeed; increasing postsecondary attainment to ensure a brighter future for Arizona
Across #Arizona —and really, across the country—there is a growing conversation about the value of college…Is it worth it? Who should go to college? Who really benefits from a college education? There is a lot of chatter suggesting that maybe education and training after high school isn’t worth it, or that the public doesn’t see the value of that for everybody. Yesterday we hosted this Morning Scoop with the Arizona Capitol Times to respond with strong evidence that Arizona voters do see value in education and training beyond high school. And, #voters want the state's Policy, Legislative, Education, and Business leaders do more to provide opportunities for #postsecondary education and training. But as you will hear our panelists say, this is not just an #education issue! Increasing opportunities for education and training after high school provides amazing benefits to individuals, their families and communities, and to the economic strength of the state. This issue affects every single one of us. Find out why in the post ⤵ .
ICYMI: Today's #MorningScoop with Arizona Capitol Times shed light on how Arizonans feel about the importance of education and training after high school, and what actions are needed to help our state reach it's attainment goal, #Achieve60AZ. Thank you to Gary Grado for excellent hosting and our incredible panelists: Rich Nickel, Education Forward Arizona Sybil Francis, Center for the Future of Arizona Monica Villalobos, Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Paul Bentz, HighGround Inc. I remember the first time, years ago, that I heard “we need to empower and engage the frontline”. It struck me as odd. “But I know my colleagues”, I thought, “they ARE engaged outside of work, they are creative and joyful…outside of work, they are collaborative and passionate…outside of work.” ✨ Maybe it’s not an employee problem, maybe it’s a work environment one! ✨ ➡️ What if we didn’t have to “empower and engage the frontline” because we never stripped students of their power, curiosity, and autonomy in conventional school systems? Leaders would no longer need to “make it safe to ask questions” because we never learned that it was unsafe… Leaders would quit relying heavily on extrinsic motivation and carrot/stick approaches because we didn’t learn to chase a “gold star” over our own creative passions… Leaders would feel safe admitting they ‘don’t know’ because they never learned their worth was directly tied to school grades… What if? Yes, I work with CEOs to redefine business success by challenging their own preconceptions. But where do you think many of those preconceptions originated? *** Respect humanity (including children!). Improve work. Continuous Improvement without the Other CI, Consciousness Improvement, is unsustainable (and unfulfilling and outdated and expensive and frustrating and…) Let's experiment together: www.theotherci.com *** #theotherci #continuousimprovement #consciousness #executive #leadership #ceo #executivecoaching #sudbury #education #consciousleadership #tps #lean #manufacturingexcellence #respectforpeople #futureofwork #change #management #respecthumanity #improvework
At Saint Louis Sudbury School, students are free to ask questions, learn from, and hang out with students and staff of all ages. Sudbury model school graduates often comment about how they are comfortable talking with their professors, supervisors, and co-workers of different ages. When have you worked with a team who were all the same age? This is a great behind the scenes moment of a younger student asking for help about possibly changing a school rule. He wanted to know about the wording of the current rule, how to make a motion in School Meeting to change it, and help writing the item on the School Meeting agenda. Are you interested in exploring Self-Directed Education in a democratic learning community for your child? Want to see your child reignite their love for learning? Provide them with an opportunity of time and space to discover themselves and prioritize their well-being? Schedule a tour of Saint Louis Sudbury School this spring, consider a Visiting Week in the spring or summer, and enroll in the fall! https://lnkd.in/gfpwApCX (Note: a few spots remain for this current School Year.)

Lets discuss Perkins V, CTE, and local corporate partnership. I found this article explaining the changes between Perkins V and Perkins IV: https://lnkd.in/gZ-cui-8. “Programs of study must culminate in an industry certification or a postsecondary credential for higher education." Perkins V allowed funding to be used at a middle school level allowing exposure to technical skills earlier in the student's educational journey. I firmly believe in exposing students earlier with makerspaces, identification of tooling, building circuits and understanding electrical, and just generally getting interested with hands-on experience. JUST LET THEM BUILD STUFF. We need what Snap-on calls the future "Makers and Fixers" to keep our increasingly technology-driven world running. There's no arguing that fact. By the time students graduate, they can be fluent in a variety of technical skills including electrical, precision measuring, torque and bolting science, and many others utilizing Snap-on Technical Education Certifications via NC3 - National Coalition of Certification Centers. Students can produce an impressive resume with fluency in a variety of technical skills in high demand, immediately contribute to the local economy, or continue to stack these credentials by continuing their education at a post-secondary school. Schools can utilize Perkins V for these credentials. "Focusing on “employability skills,” Perkins V aligns itself with local employment needs." Getting local companies involved via partnership and sponsorship with what I call "Bridging the gap between education and industry" ensures local employers are getting the talent they need. Companies can't afford not being involved with their local CTE programs. Now on a state level, many states have already adopted a standard of CTE technical skills recognizing Snap-on Technical Education certifications in a variety of CTE programs and I believe it is time the State of Michigan does too. We're manufacturing first here in this great state and always have been. Let's educate and expose the next generation to the great opportunities in CTE and continue our superiority in manufacturing technology. #CTE #Snapontechnicaleducation #Makersandfixers #Michigan
Six years ago, the Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act, known as Perkins V, was signed into law. For the first time, data from post-2020 enrollment and performance is available this year, allowing us to begin measuring the impact of the law on states, learners, and communities. Since Perkins V took effect, Advance CTE has supported states through convening spaces and state plan review to maximize the legislation's elements to expand learner supports, foster sustained stakeholder collaboration, spark creativity in program delivery, and more.

Talk about creative recruiting and retention. I'd love to hear other innovative recruiting strategies
A group of educators moved in to the Fairfield County Teacher Village this weekend. This village gives educators in the district an affordable housing option with a short commute to rural schools. Juan Alvarado is the inaugural Educator in Residence in the USC College of Education house in the village. He is beginning his first year in the classroom. “You do take a moment and think, ‘Is this too good to be true?’” Alvarado said, “I’m thankful for the position and (that) I took advantage of the opportunity.” See the full story on WIS-TV: bit.ly/46EFL1T

UPCOMING ROUNDTABLE REGISTRATION: The number of California school superintendents quitting or retiring is escalating, despite increased salaries and benefits. Among the reasons for leaving: Polarized politics, stress and threats stemming from pandemic school closures. Some are being pushed out by newly elected school board majorities. • Why have superintendent jobs become so difficult? • What can school boards do to attract and retain superintendents? • What can superintendents do to navigate politically charged board meetings and issues? Join EdSource's Diana Lambert and Anne Vasquez as they explore these questions and much more with a panel of veteran superintendents and experts.
Superintendents are quitting: What can be done to keep them?
