How’s the market? A question I am asked several times on a daily basis. From a recruitment perspective, the building services market in Sydney isn’t bad at all. Yes there are redundancies, but these so far have been pretty isolated to the Tier 1’s who have been going to town on large government projects for the past few years, but we are seeing most (not all), tier 2’s and a lot of the boutiques are actually very busy. In the past 3 weeks alone we’ve had over 20 new consultancy based positions called in across Sydney alone, most of which at intermediate level, and our clients are moving quickly to hire. Whether or not these roles are from growth or churn it’s hard to say but I dare say a bit of both. Is the market the best it’s been? no. Is it quiet? no. Is it a bad time to move company? Absolutely not.

A lot of retail candidates we’re speaking to are saying that some of the salaries being advertised simply aren’t enough – barely above minimum wage. I get it – businesses are feeling the pinch, but offering salaries in the low to mid-twenties for Store Manager roles? It’s not sustainable. 🛑 In today’s retail environment, where Store Managers are juggling operations, customer service, stock control, and team management, the salary has to reflect the responsibility. Paying just above minimum wage for such a crucial role often leads to higher turnover, low engagement, and an overall impact on team performance.
