🎙 Podcast of the week: "We have become monocultural in our fields and minds" 📣 This week’s podcast features a conversation with Nettie Wiebe, an organic farmer and long-time small farm activist, who co-authored the recent Land Squeeze report with the IPES-Food food panel. It explores how the current financialisation of agriculture impacts land access and sustainability, with over 70% of farmland controlled by just 1% of farms. ⚖️ The Land Squeeze report reveals significant barriers for young and aspiring farmers, especially in Europe’s ageing agricultural sector. Rising land prices and competition from large industrial operations highlight the urgent need for sustainable financing solutions that support equitable access to land. 💡 Nettie discusses the importance of reframing our financial systems to prioritize sustainable practices and community resilience. We delve into the need for land reform, investing in Indigenous women’s farming organizations, and fostering social cohesion as essential components of a sustainable finance strategy for agriculture. 🔗 Listen here: https://lnkd.in/eCZVhGrJ

Excited to share my latest briefing! Balancing food production and the need to restore degraded land is complex. In a new Evidensia briefing, supported by the Global Environment Facility and the UNDP Food & Agricultural Commodity Systems, we outline key challenges and barriers to restoration within commodity production landscapes. Through three case studies from Latin America, Africa, and Asia, we explore how projects are overcoming these obstacles. Key insights: 👉 Private sector involvement is growing, with companies recognising the value of restoration in reducing risks, ensuring long-term supply, and meeting sustainability standards. 👉 Ecosystem restoration in complex landscapes involves balancing conservation with agricultural productivity, where strategies like agroforestry and improved crop varieties can help minimise trade-offs. 👉 Scaling restoration efforts requires landscape-level approaches and multistakeholder collaboration to address capacity gaps, replicate successes, and ensure effective restoration. Explore the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/d-qBkyAg #EcosystemResotration #FoodSystems Thanks to Lavinia Gasperini, Vidya Rangan, Tao Wang and Dinara Akhmetova for document review, and to Barney Jeffries and Cath Perry for copy and design support respectively.

On #WorldFoodDay, we reaffirm our commitment to promoting food security through innovative and sustainable practices. This year’s theme “The Right to Food”, highlights the pressing need for everyone to have access to nutritious and healthy food. As global challenges grow, food security is more important than ever. In 🇳🇬, we work with our partners International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC), International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), SAHEL CONSULTING SAHELCONSULTING, GAIN and CARE through dedicated programs HortiNigeria Program, Youth in Agribusiness, Collaborative Seed Program (CSP) to boost agricultural development, promote agroecological solutions and improve food systems. In the last 3 years, we have worked with over 70,000 smallholder farmers and young agri-preneurs to scale production and improve the quality of output. These programs are transforming food and nutrition security in the country. Through partnerships with 🇳🇱 and 🇳🇬 businesses and institutions, we’re fostering innovation and collaboration to ensure a stable food supply, while also creating jobs and promoting youth entrepreneurship. Together, we can build a world where everyone has the right to healthy, sustainable food. #FarmingtheFuture #SolvingGlobalChallengesTogether
