This week as Kim Zolciak infamously sang I’m ‘tardy to the party’ and it’s all thanks to having been struck down with a horrific case of the flu! (Thanks reception class germs) What party am I late to I hear you cry? Why, National apprenticeship week of course! It felt important for me to mark #NAW24 for a couple of great reasons. 1) I am an apprentice myself this year - Capita have a rich history of delivering apprenticeship programmes, not only improving the internal skills pipeline, but also providing opportunities for young people, our wider communities and those in work in the areas where we do our business, offering the opportunity to gain skills and knowledge whilst supporting employees so that they can build their confidence. I know firsthand that my personal and professional development is a key priority. In fact, I’ve got a call later today with my manager and my trainer to complete a very important baseline review!  2) I am responsible for driving and supporting the creation of apprenticeships on the Capita Local Public Service accounts where we have made a social value commitment to do so and 3) I am also responsible for working with other local authorities to create apprenticeships with local SMEs through Capita apprenticeship levy donation - like the event with Barnet Council on Friday to launch a platform to do just that. We make these commitments because we understand the importance of apprenticeships we recognise the long-term positive impact that apprenticeships can have on individuals, businesses, and local communities, irrespective of age or background and through our commitments, we provide individuals with excellent opportunities to build transferable skills, while being employed and enabling local business to create a valuable talent pipeline to meet business needs, both now and in future.    Modern apprenticeships are dynamic, valuable and over the past five years have undergone significant transformations, enhancing both their quality and accessibility. As apprenticeships continue to evolve, understanding who accesses them and how they impact social mobility becomes crucial. It’s essential that we continue to refine apprenticeship programs to create opportunities for all learners and promote upward mobility and that's something that I am keen to ensure that we do as part of our Social Value commitments at Capita Local Public Service.

Apprenticeships can be a great career pathway and it’s great to hear Stephen Hunt FCA, our CEO at BNP Paribas Personal Finance UK, supporting this. We’re delighted to collaborate with Digital Innovators and it’s been a great experience supporting apprentices who have joined us after completing the #digitalinnovators #TransitionToWork and #CareerExperience programmes, and seeing them develop on their development journey. #naw2024 #nationalapprenticeshipweek

National Apprenticeship Week is 5th to 11th Feb 2024 and Heritage Connects (a shared community of practice for everyone in the historic environment sector) is running a Q&A with employers on 6th Feb, 10am to 4pm. See what Heritage Connects are saying: 'National Apprenticeship Week celebrates the work and achievements of apprentices and their employers across the country, and the positive impact that they make, including in the heritage sector. On Tuesday 6 February, employers of apprentices within the heritage sector will be hosting a Q&A in the Heritage Connects forum. Read about their experiences throughout the day and post your questions in the comments.   Heritage Apprenticeships support our sector to train and maintain a skilled workforce, through standards designed specifically for the heritage sector, or through the broader range of standards available for professional skills that can then be adapted for the sector. Employers supporting apprentices help to offer new routes into a range of professions, address staff shortages and skills gaps, and diversify the sector.
