Access to reliable processing infrastructure remains a primary challenge of operating successfully in the compost industry. While the demand for compost facilities is steadily increasing, the progress on creating this critical infrastructure is slow. Now more than ever, we are seeing a need to invest and support the scaling of industrial facilities, just as we saw a need 13 years ago to develop hauling and logistic capabilities. Across the cities we operate in, we have been intentional about building strong relationships with great processing partners that operate at high standards. In cities where this infrastructure does not exist, we have set out to build it ourselves. We have operated our own 5-acre Class II Compost Facility in Douglas County, Georgia since 2017. Developing this facility included creating a shared language to help community stakeholders and public entities understand the importance of organic recycling infrastructure and support policy and zoning efforts to make #compost infrastructure easier to develop. As more funding opportunities become available, prioritizing scalable processing infrastructure is going to be a critical part of the long term success of food waste diversion programs. Furthermore, there is tremendous opportunity to consider how compost can play a role in building more #circular and #regenerative local systems, and keep resources and meaningful jobs in our communities. No one's favourite version of R&R, but an essential part of a clean, functioning city. We pick up glass, plastics & cans, paper & cardboard, food scraps and general waste from around 63,000 households each week. And Hamilton, we produce a lot. In just a year, we put in our bins: - 3 million kg of glass - 3 million kg of food waste for composting - 7.5 million kg of other recycling in yellow kerbside bins - and nearly 16 million kg of general waste. And that’s not to mention the waste produced by our commercial and business sector, and the stuff you drop off at the resource recovery centre after a spring clean! One of the Sprints we're running, sponsored by WRc Group, is looking at: Recycle to Replenish: Keeping Water in the Main, Not Down the Drain! How can we re-use the water from water mains flushing by returning it to the water network? NWL carries out flushing in our DMAs to help remove excess deposits from our water network and so improve the customer experience. In the last few years our teams have flushed around 4000km of distribution main per annum to maintain water quality. During the summer months and periods of high demand we are do not flush our water mains so we are looking for solutions that can help us re-use the water used for flushing back into the network. The UK is at risk of severe water shortages with the Environment Agency highlighting that “if no action is taken between 2025 and 2050 around 4 billion extra litres of water per day will be needed for public water supply”. We are looking for people form network operations, water quality, vehicle design & leasing, environmental waste management companies and engineers to help us come up with a solution. We need waste police! 📜 Many countries have regulations to manage Construction & Demolition (C&D) waste, but these laws are (very) often not enforced properly. Well, we actually need waste educators! ♻ Contractors, workers, and designers, often lack the necessary knowledge and training on waste management strategies. And when there is the willingness of doing it well: - The financial costs of transporting, sorting, and recycling C&D waste are often higher than simply disposing of it in landfills. This discourages recycling and reuse. - There is a weak market for products made from recycled C&D waste, mainly due to the lack of financial incentives for stakeholders to produce or purchase recycled materials. - There are concerns about the quality and performance of recycled materials. - Many contractors (and clients) are reluctant to adopt sustainable practices due to ingrained preferences for traditional methods and the perception that eco-friendly alternatives are more expensive or less effective. 🔎 The figures below are from a recent data centre developed in the Nordics. I am curious to know how much of that 30% of rework and all the reworks' materials out there are properly reused / recycled. PS: Hurray to transparency on data, I would love to see more of that in events and conversations!
