#1 feature/benefit of any chartered or public edu alternative is instructor-to-learner ratio. This quotient is the primary predictor of student achievement. Anything else is a shadow factor.

I 100% agree with Florida’s “universal school choice” initiative. Students should not be restricted to schools in their zip code. Public schools are not all bad, and non-public school options are not all good. But this is the point: parents and students should have the option to CHOOSE. Oakland is bucking this trend in a big change from the previous 20 years: While nationwide, charter school enrollment increased by 300,000 students from 2019 to 2022, a 9% increase, in Oakland it dropped 2100 students over the same time period, a 12% drop. This year (2023-24) charter enrollment has dropped an additional 2% or 240 students. Enrollment is also dropping in Oakland Unified of course, but not as fast; so charter enrollment has dropped this year to 30% of the charter/public total, from a high of 32% in 2019-20.

Lots to dig into here. Implications for public schools are numerous and concerning. EPPs who prepare teachers for public schools must also consider these shifts.

Texas hasn’t released school ratings yet — and nobody knows when it will. The Texas Education Agency is under a court order preventing the release of scores, leading to ongoing uncertainty. Advocates argue that accountability scores offer valuable insights to families and educators. Critics claim the system places too much weight on standardized test scores and stigmatizes lower-income neighborhoods. The state uses these grades to monitor struggling campuses, potentially leading to interventions or closures. HISD released unofficial scores using a a new rating formula, projecting a significant increase in schools receiving D or F grades. Over 200 school districts have protested the new formula.
