NBC has managed to avoid what every streaming distributor dreads: Headlines about server meltdowns and software glitches. "We try to make livestreaming look easy, but actually it's not," Patrick Miceli, Peacock's chief technology officer, told me. His team is handling up to 60 simultaneous live events, for a grand total of about 1,800 during the first week alone. "This year is quite an inflection point," he says, "in terms of what a streaming platform with live sports can do." It’s a rare instance of fragmentation being to streaming’s benefit; the Olympics illustrate how all the shattered pieces can be stuck back together. “These days, it’s not often that we can unite people and bring them together around something,” says Molly Solomon, executive producer and president of NBC Olympics Production. “The Olympics is doing it.” This has already redounded to NBC’s and the International Olympic Committee's benefit. Sports selling their rights in full to a broadcaster and allowing them the flexibility to sub license the rights they've acquired to other platforms is such a fascinating and complex situation to process when you look at the potential ramifications. The recent TNT Sports deal with The Football Association is a deal that incorporates this very framework, and is something we've seen a number of times before from parent company Warner Bros. Discovery and previously Eurosport around the Olympics and Golf. On the one hand, the sports property gets what they want - a simplified rights relationship with a singular entity, at a likely price that would rival or surpass a combination of trying to work through a fragmented rights sale and approach with more partners. However by doing so, the control of those rights and what's done with them will naturally shift more to the rights buyer than the rights owner, and with sports properties like the FA Cup being historically built on a free to air base, the risks are that the ultimate decision maker on those sub licensing deals won't always sit with the organisation who needs to consider the best interests of the entire ecosystem - versus in this case the broadcaster likely selling off rights that provide better ROI, when not on their own platforms. Or in many instances, would be wastage or simply un-used rights depending on their approach to #streaming and distribution. Further complexity comes into play when the requirement is that competitors bidding for those rights, then have to transact with each other on sublicensing deals and we'e seen instances where the major broadcasters will call their bluff and refuse to do deals with those that acquired the rights (i.e. the UFC and Eleven Sports in the UK 5+ years ago) All in all it will be fascinating to see how expansive the sub licensing of the FA Cup will be by TNT Sports and whether fans will be happy with the access and coverage they've grown to expect. Discovery (WBD) is ready for the Paris Olympics and the opportunities that the Summer Games will bring for the #media and #entertainment giant’s streamer HBO Max and beyond, Andrew Georgiou, president and managing director of WBD U.K. & Ireland and WBD #Sports #Europe, signaled in a chat with journalists on Thursday. And he discussed how #AI and digital navigation innovations on streaming services will add to consumers’ ability to discover and enjoy the big event. This year’s Games are the first since the merger of Discovery Inc and WarnerMedia into WBD. The company will show the Summer Olympics 2024 across 47 markets in 19 languages on its streaming platforms Max and Discovery+, depending on the specific market, with #TV coverage on its Eurosport channels. “Most importantly, from our perspective, the Olympics is going to be a really important ingredient in the launch plans for Max, which we’ve already launched in 25 markets in Europe,” the executive told reporters from Paris during a virtual roundtable. “The International Olympic Committee – IOC , having just come off the heels of season 2 of House of the Dragon is a really important additional marker in building the Max brand across Europe and everything that we do.” The #streaming platforms allow for digital innovations that should help audiences find and enjoy more of the sports content they love and crave, Georgiou also argued on Thursday. “Max and the digital platforms give you a different opportunity to create tools and engagement that give more control to the consumer around how they experience the content they love,” he said, calling the Olympics “one of the hardest” sporting events to navigate “because there are so many things happening all at the same time.” For example, “the highest concurrency of simultaneous events happening during these Games is 54 simultaneous live events that we broadcast in those 50 markets in 20 different languages,” the exec explained. “With the volume of content, 3,800 hours of live competition that we will broadcast on our streaming platform, you’ve got to provide tools for the audience to navigate. Some of them are new, and some of them are better than they were.”
