The European Federation of Journalists was in Georgia this week as part of a fact-finding mission, conducted by the Council of Europe’s Safety of Journalists Platform and the Media Freedom Rapid Response (MFRR). The mission to Tbilisi found a worrisome deterioration in press freedom, with increasing threats to journalists. Key findings include: 🔸 Increased polarisation and erosion of media pluralism 🔸 Intimidation, self-censorship 🔸 The chilling effect of the "Transparency of Foreign Influence" law 🔸 Journalists facing physical and verbal attacks, some forced into exile 🔸 Continued impunity for crimes against journalists As we approach the upcoming elections, it's crucial to ensure that journalists can work safely and freely. BFMI welcomes the new and returning MEPs back to the European Parliament and hopes they will continue to advocate for #MediaFreedom across the #EU. As the new parliamentarians pursue enlargement, BFMI outlines what they should prioritise to ensure accession nations - particularly in the #Balkans - commit to media freedom. ✅ Mandate and enforce robust legal frameworks to protect journalists and media outlets from political and economic influence. ✅ Require transparency in how state advertising is distributed, preventing states from punishing critical voices by witholding funding. ✅ Promote the active involvement of civil society in monitoring and reporting on media freedom violations. ✅ Ensure that accession states and authoritarian regimes prioritise #mediafreedom by making the distribution of funding conditional on alignment with #EU standards on media freedom.
