Compelling to see Air Forces around the world commission and deploy Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS), with the Royal Canadian Air Force the latest to take up the UAS mantle. The RCAF has formally signed a CAD$2.49 billion contract for General Atomics Aeronautical Systems to deliver 11 armed MQ-9B SkyGuardian UAS and 6 ground control stations, among other support and infrastructure services. The deal, which will see the first MQ-9B delivery in 2028, will expand the potential of single-engine UAS to the highest latitudes yet — with aircraft expected to perform operations in Canadian airspace deep within the Arctic Circle. 🛩 Exciting News! Airbus has just signed a significant contract with the Spanish Ministry of Defence, marking a major step forward in the development of the High Performance Tactical UAS called SIRTAP. This cutting-edge unmanned aerial system will greatly enhance the tactical capabilities of the Spanish Army and the Air and Space Force. Under this contract, a total of nine systems will be acquired, each consisting of three unmanned aerial vehicles and one ground control station. Additionally, two simulators will be provided to train the Spanish Armed Forces. SIRTAP, designed and fully developed in Spain, will integrate national capabilities, bolstering our nation's sovereignty. It is not only versatile but also utilizes ITAR-free components, making it well-suited for the international market. Jean-Brice Dumont, Head of Military Air Systems at Airbus Defence and Space, expressed confidence in SIRTAP's potential to play a pivotal role globally. With a payload capacity of over 150kgs, SIRTAP is specifically designed for advanced surveillance, intelligence, and reconnaissance missions, both on land and at sea. Its impressive range of more than 2,000km and endurance of over 20 hours ensure flexibility and responsiveness, enabling day and night operations in the most challenging environments. At Eurosatory 2024, Edge Autonomy and Safran Electronics & Defense unveiled Lanner, a new configuration of the Penguin Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) Uncrewed Aircraft System (UAS). The Lanner configuration is based on the field-proven Penguin UAS platform and has been specifically modified to meet the requirements of the SDTL (Light Tactical Drone System) program for the French armed forces. In this configuration, the Penguin drone can address multiple missions through a simultaneous dual payload capability, including Electro-Optical/Infra-Red systems, electronic warfare (detection of radio signals or jamming for example), radar, and ammunitions. It can thus carry out land and maritime intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions. Developed and produced in Europe, the Lanner configuration establishes Safran Electronics & Defense and Edge Autonomy as a European leader in tactical UAVs. Sikorsky, a Lockheed Martin company (NYSE: LMT), is conducting flight tests to mature the control laws and aerodynamics of a novel vertical takeoff and landing uncrewed aerial system (VTOL / UAS). The flight tests are intended to prove the efficiency and scalability of a twin proprotor ‘rotor blown wing’ configuration that sits on its tail to take-off and land like a helicopter, and transitions easily to horizontal forward flight for long-endurance missions, such as intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and targeting. The ongoing flight tests support the ANCILLARY initiative by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), which seeks to develop a Class 3 UAS VTOL X-Plane that can operate in most weather conditions from ship decks and unprepared surfaces without infrastructure. The term ‘rotor blown wing’ refers to the constant airflow from the proprotor wash across the wing. Sikorsky chose the design to reduce drag on the wing in hover mode and when transitioning to forward flight, and to increase cruise efficiencies and endurance. The design is just one of the many ways Sikorsky is advancing 21st Century Security® technologies and innovations. For the flight tests now underway, Sikorsky is flying a proof-of-concept vehicle powered by a battery. 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗚𝗣𝗦 𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗥𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀 Persistent GPS jamming incidents have affected more than 1.600 airplanes, including civilian aircrafts, across Eastern Europe, in less than two days. Many interferences lasted nearly 48 hours. March 23rd - Extensive jamming across Poland and southern Sweden March 25th - High levels of interference concentrated almost exclusively across northeastern and northwestern Poland These interferences pose risks to both manned and unmanned aircraft by disrupting or spoofing GPS signals, potentially leading to navigation system errors. In response to these incidents, pilots have begun to switch off GPS navigation and have turned to alternative navigation systems, such as inertial navigation, to mitigate the risks associated with GPS interference. But is this enough? The increasing sophistication of these jamming techniques, including GPS spoofing, highlights the evolving challenges faced by the aviation industry.
