In celebration of this special day, we present a meaningful challenge. In collaboration with CAIS, we challenge our members to support a circular economy by donating cushions and duvets that no longer meet quality standards. These will be repurposed into puffs for commercial or public spaces, with exteriors made from recycled advertising tarps. Sustainable city means also healthy and climate friendly city, and it also means that "business as usual" is not the story of the game. We need to work with new concepts for mobility, energy and behaviour change. Riga is one 100 cities of the EU mission city approach working towards climate neutrality.

Late autumn...dark & cold time in Finland? No it is not. Look out from your window, nature is in there, showing all the colours, shapes of the trees. In the city: trees & bushes, in countryside: fields & forests. Let us give a moment to think about our way of living in harmony with the nature. Could it be possible for some of us to live already in nearby future in cityvillages which are scaled to the size where nature is near us. Where we still have all the everyday facilities. We need also city centres but we should have also another sustainable choice to live next to the city centres in cityvillages where local powerstations, natureparks and refreshment areas are situated in a harmony next to each other. Communal transport network will finally make it happen, capital region will be a network of active areas. The biggest question is how we can keep living costs in a reasonable level? If living costs in capital region area stay in too high level, we can never reach this goal. What else we can do to go to sustainable direction? Read articles from Environmental scientist Gretchen Daily from University of Stanford: we are measuring only GDP, we should also start to measure GEP (cross ecosystem product). In some countries there are already mechanisms how they steer development to sustainable direction: In china they are already testing Daily´s methods to measure yearly value of nature in certain area. Gretchen Daily visited in Finland in seminar for 25 company leaders this autumn. She is using this example quite often, as one of the good methods to reach the goal: New York has been financing sustainable development of Catskills mountains area to allow inhabitants of NY to get pure drinking water also in the future from this area. It is cheaper for the city of NY to finance sustainable ways of farming in Catskills to preserve water resources as to built a water treatment plant. So, we still have hope!
