📢 Re-election of Ursula von der Leyen as President of the European Commission Key takeaways for financial services: 💰 Investment Commission: Von der Leyen’s second term will be an "investment Commission." To unlock the financing needed for the tween transition, Europe must complete the Capital Markets Union. This is expected to attract EUR 470 billion in investments annually. Recognizing Europe's deficit in private capital, the Commission will introduce risk-absorption methods to incentivize investors to fund European companies. 💹 Tackling Market Fragmentation: With EUR 300 billion in savings moving abroad each year, von der Leyen aims to address the fragmentation of financial markets, ensuring that capital remains within Europe to fuel innovation. Echoing proposals made by former Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta in his report on the future of the Single Market, the Commission plans to propose a European Savings and Investment Union. 🚀 European Competitiveness Fund: A new proposal for this fund will support key projects in strategic technologies, with the first set of common projects expected in early 2025, as part of the next multiannual financial framework. 🌏 Economic Foreign Policy: To adapt to global challenges, the Commission will complete the review of the foreign direct investment screening framework and address outbound investment risks, reinforcing Europe’s economic sovereignty. 🌐 Global Gateway Expansion: The initiative will be taken to the next level with an integrated offer, including infrastructure investments, in collaboration with public development banks, the EIB, the EBRD, export credit agencies, and the private sector. Newt Steps? Von der Leyen will now proceed to select candidates for the Commissioner roles and allocate their respective portfolios. With her expertise in Cohesion Policy, Vice President-designate Roxana Minzatu understands that people and #skills are the basis for #competitiveness, social justice, and tackling Europe's demographic challenges. People also drive #research and #innovation, which is why we urge the new Commission to strongly integrate this portfolio with that of Commissioner-designate Ekaterina Zaharieva. As European civil society calls for deeper policy alignment, we will continue to advocate for more and not less—particularly in areas affecting higher education institutions.

Today, the BBC published an important story on leading cities are bringing #biodiversity back to their territories by removing unnecessary strips of pavement. The article features our beautiful member city stad Leuven and all of the benefits this can bring - #depaving allows water to soak into the ground, which reduces the risk of flooding and helps wildlife to remain in urban spaces by allowing the growth of native flora. The planting of trees both produces shade, protecting against heatwaves and improves citizen's health. Next week, the far-right in the European Parliament wants to stop this happening in other cities. This is precisely why the European Committee of the Regions was created, a collegial body that intervenes at different stages of the Union's legislative process. 🗓️On 14 February 2024, our Chair Christophe Deloire took part in the Council of Europe Ministers’ Deputies meeting urging them to take the necessary measures to ensure the right to access reliable information. 💡Specifically, he called upon the Council of Europe to elaborate an international binding Convention on the right to access reliable information. 🗣️“Democratic countries must join efforts to defend democracy and our global information space. The International Partnership for Information and Democracy can be the basis to elaborate a Convention on the right to access reliable information”, Christophe Deloire stated at the meeting. 🌐 As the implementing entity of the  International Partnership for Information and Democracy, the Forum works to develop the normative and policy frameworks, facilitate exchange among democratic States, and provide a periodic evaluations of the evolution of the right to reliable information.
