Ursula von der Leyen presents her political priorities to the EP before the vote as to whether she will led the EC for a second term of office. So what's on her list? Accession, defence including border security, Mental health crisis, AI, a new action plan to enable fair transition for workers, women's rights, a vision for agriculture and food, a new Clean industrial Deal to succeed the Green Deal, a new approach to competition policy were all set out. She proposed several new Commissioners including a Commissioner for Housing tasked with putting forward the first ever European Affordable housing plan ( whilst housing is generally considered a national competence she stated we have to support people where it matters most and Europe faces a housing crisis). Stating that Europe should be the best place to grow up in and the best place to grow old in, the Commissioner for Youth's name is proposed to be changed to Commissioner for intergenerational fairness whilst there will also be a new Commissioner for Equality. Also proposed is a Commissioner for the Mediterranean and a Commissioner for Defence. On Research and Innovation, she proposes increasing our research spending to focus more on strategic priorities, on groundbreaking fundamental research and disruptive innovation and on scientific excellence. To do this she proposes expanding the ERC and the EIC. Also proposed is to set up a European AI Research council Let's see what happens in the vote...

🙌 In her speech, President Ursula von der Leyen raises the significant challenge of young people's exposure to screens and the detrimental effects on mental health, as it has already been documented by numerous scientific studies. The main findings show that 2 hours or more of recreational screen time a day increases the risk of obesity, anxiety, social phobia, depression and aggression, not to mention the vulnerability to misinformation, the disaffection of young people for the public sphere and at least for democracy.  This speaks for more incentives and massive investments in media education policies. 👉 President Ursula von der Leyen has announced her intention to tackle this problem resolutely in her second term of office! 🙏 🙏 #medialiteracy #misinformation #fakenews #mentalhealth #Europeancommission

The continued rise of the far-right, which is accelerating populist policies, will increase divisions within the EU and pose the risk of restricting the unity of the union and its ability to act together. Furthermore, considering that far-right movements have a critical perspective on the existence and legitimacy of regional and international institutions, the spread of far-right governments may also bring into question the existence of these institutions on the European continent.

Von der Leyen has until next Thursday to schmooze at least 361 of the required votes. The voter base of Members of European Parliament (MEPs) has shifted significantly to the right. She still has options; her current coalition holds more than the 361 required votes. However, historically a notable percentage of MEPs do not vote on party lines on the Commissioner's secret ballot vote. She can either look further left to the Greens, or veer right, and make some concessions on immigration policy. Both potential partners will leave a bad taste in some of her coalition MEP's mouths. If she secures a second term, global players can expect a shift in approach from her first term. As the mood of many European voters, and the ideological bend of the EU's MEPs has swung right. #Europoli #EU

The European citizens have voted. The real work starts now! In the upcoming weeks it will be defined who will become the Commission President, the President of the European Council and also very important - in a very tense geopolitical situation - who will become the next High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. The spillover effects in France will also need to be followed very closely as they may have a crucial impact on Ukraine.
