Today, January 11, according to the 2024 National Day Calendar, is Human Trafficking Awareness Day. Although slavery officially ended in 1865 in the United States, slavery in the form of human trafficking of children and adults still continues today. Despite the nearly worldwide adoption of international and domestic norms to address and prevent human trafficking, we continue to witness traffickers exploit people in the United States and around the world. We know this is also a problem on our southern border. Every Presidential proclamation since the year 2000, for January ends with a call to action for all Americans to recognize the vital role everyone can play in combating all forms of human trafficking. https://lnkd.in/gw4GZjMw

OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) presented a practical guide on including the voice of victims in policy-making and policy implementation. 👉 What are 10 guiding principles when listening to hate crime victims? ➡️ 1. Put victims at the centre of any initiative ➡️ 2. Choose a suitable format for engagement ➡️ 3. Prepare the engagement ➡️ 4. Create safer spaces ➡️ 5. Manage expectations ➡️ 6. Offer support before, during and after the event ➡️ 7. Build trust and long-term partnerships ➡️ 8. Put systems in place to institutionalize hate crime victims’ voices ➡️ 9. Avoid instrumentalizing victims and their voices ➡️ 10. Ensure a range of voices are heard By including hate crime victims in the development of policy responses, authorities can better ensure that systems, policies and programmes are tailored to the needs of victims, helping them to recover and regain agency. ❗This year, the EU revised the Directive on preventing and combating trafficking in human beings and protecting its victims with the aim to provide stronger tools to prosecute exploitation and end impunity for anyone exploiting a victim. 🤝🏻 It is essential we join forces to support victims of human trafficking, particularly in light of big sporting events. As per new the new report by the Réseau National de Défense des Droits Humains (RNDDH), of the at least 208 people slain in Haiti's violence between January & March, included: - 7 passengers killed aboard a sailboat between Mariani & Gressier - 9 charred bodies found on a landfill in Delmas 19 - Married store owners in Bassin-Bleu decapitated by armed bandits - 4 occupants of a minibus slain in the Artibonite Valley - 5 slain in Portail Léogane by armed men in a car - 10 slain aboard a public transport bus along the Port-au-Prince to Mirebalais route - An 80 year-old man man executed in Léogane's Hôpital Sainte Croix by unidentified armed individuals who burst into the operating room - A 7 year-old child hit by a stray bullet in Pétionville's Bellevue 3 area - A journalist hit by a stray bullet in Delmas 19 This new report is a stark illustration of how NOWHERE in the capital or environs (or indeed, a number of other locales in Haiti) are safe, & that death can strike at any time. There is really no way to overstate the daily terror people in Haiti face at the present time. Citizens in Haiti are today forced to live under criminal anarchy, gang terrorism & economic collapse at a level that is an affront to human dignity. To the world at large, do not grow fatigued of this issue & don't stop talking about it. We must all help however we can.

In 1990, in Stockholm, Sweden, Victim Support Europe officially designated the 22nd of February as the European Day for Victims of Crime. This day serves as a poignant reminder to honour the countless individuals who have suffered at the hands of criminals – many millions every year – children and adults, women and men, poor and wealthy, residents and visitors to the EU. Our heartfelt sympathies extend to all who have suffered due to criminal acts. The reality of becoming a victim of crime is a potential reality for anyone. Victim Support Europe, along with its members and partners, diligently work day in and day out to provide protection and assistance to those affected by crime. Nevertheless, this endeavour cannot be achieved in isolation. It necessitates collective effort from all individuals to actively engage, advocate, challenge offenders, and amplify the voices of victims. Remember the words of Edward Hale: “Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.” Those words are for all of you. How did we come to this point with #modernslavery and #humantrafficking in the #UK and how can we resolve it? The Council of Europe Group of Experts on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings (GRETA) has published its latest general report of activities, highlighting the key achievements in 2023. In relation to the UK it states, "The Illegal Migration Bill...would run contrary to core obligations under the Convention and constitute a significant step backwards in the fight against human trafficking and modern slavery in the United Kingdom, making it harder to identify victims, prosecute traffickers and combat human trafficking." (Section 7) It is hard to contemplate that the quote by Helga Gayer in the visual, from Section 82 is directed at the UK. Despite that, Hope for Justice and Slave-Free Alliance training are exploring how do we support professionals skill set working in a challenging system but who want to be person centred and acknowledge a victim's human rights. https://lnkd.in/e9p3Wjwr
