Starke Ayres, in collaboration with Food & Trees for Africa, envisions a future where access to abundant #nutritious #food grown #sustainably is not just an aspiration but an essential #humanright met in our society. The current reality however indicates that in 2021, one in every five South Africans experienced hunger, constituting 20.2% of the population, with the United Nations projecting further increases globally. A thriving society relies on the health and fulfilment of its individuals, beginning with the support of their fundamental human rights. Community food gardens offer a simple yet effective means of meeting these needs, representing a national imperative to enhance #foodsecurity and restore urban #biodiversity. The World Food Programme (#WFP) is proud to work with around 1,000 non-governmental organizations (#NGOs) around the globe, from small grassroots groups to large international #humanitarianagencies. Without this #collaboration, our efforts to bring much-needed #assistance to 152 million people in over 120 countries would not be possible. Without the vocal support of these organizations, our efforts to put #zerohunger at the top of the international agenda would be far less successful. NGOs are at our side in many programme settings, from #fooddistributions in #emergencies to longer-term initiatives such as #schoolmeals and #assetcreation. In fact, three-quarters of our #food and #cashbasedtransfers are delivered together with NGOs. As we celebrate World Environment Day, it is essential to reflect on the progress made and recognize the work still to be done. The challenges facing our environment are complex and multifaceted, requiring a united and sustained effort. By continuing to raise awareness, advocating for meaningful policy changes, and taking action at every level of society, we can move closer to a world where both people and nature thrive. In alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals 2 (Zero Hunger), 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), 13 (Climate Action), and 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), LFBI’s Agricultural Recovery Program focuses on combating food loss right at the production stage by partnering with local farmers to salvage surplus harvest and redistributing them to those in need. 🌱 Empowering Farmers in Ghana: The Success of the Grow Ghana Initiative In response to the challenges faced by farmers due to the Russia-Ukraine war, which impacted access to affordable fertilisers across Africa, Yara swiftly responded with the Grow Ghana Initiative. Yara Ghana donated premium fertilisers valued at USD 20 million to smallholder farmers, reducing their cost per acre by 33.3% and increasing food system resilience. 👨🌾👩🌾 This initiative has not only tackled immediate challenges but also created sustainable impacts. Over 500 youth have gained employment opportunities, and farmers have received vital agronomic knowledge to boost productivity. This holistic approach has contributed to agricultural #sustainability, #prosperity, and security in Ghana. 💚 To mark the closure of the initiative, Yara Ghana recently donated 3,800 bags of YaraMila Actyva fertiliser across the country.
