🌟 Reflecting on Race Equality Week: Our Pledge to #ListenActChange 🌟 As Race Equality Week draws to a close, I want to take a moment to reflect on the invaluable conversations we've shared. Through our Get Comfortable with being Uncomfortable discussions, led by the incredible Marianne Cuthbertson, we delved into the pressing issues affecting our ethnically diverse colleagues, friends, and communities. It's evident that while there's much work ahead, there's also immense potential for positive change. At #Incommunities, our dedication to fairness and equity for all remains unwavering, but we recognise that merely acknowledging challenges is insufficient. Action is needed. Our commitment extends beyond words to solid steps to make progress. The attached infographic outlines actions each of us can personally undertake to contribute to #ListenActChange and drive real, lasting change. Did you know that this week is the launch of UK Race Equality Week?! It's time in the calendar when we're invited to join a collective of organisations exploring how we can deepen our exploration and understanding of the inequalities that exist across society for racially underrepresented groups. There are tons of resources on the Race Equality Week website to support your organisations with insights, practical tools and conversation starters. As we enter into this week, I'm reminded of these reflections from a brilliant book on diversity and inclusion 'Diversity Beyond Lip Service' by La'Wana Harris, CDE, ACC. 1. "Sometimes we have to voice the bad to get to the good." We cannot change what we're not willing to confront. 2. "The fact that an organisation has a lot of work to do on diversity and inclusion shouldn't be an incriminating secret IF the organisation is willing to work on it." I find this reflection- hope giving and I share it often when working with leaders. Let's get to work. We can do it..together. Link to resources in the comments.

Race Equality Week 2024: 5–11th Feb A UK-wide initiative uniting thousands of organisations and individuals to address race equality barriers in the workplace. But I personally feel it should be Race EQUITY Week 🙏🏼 ❤️🩷🧡💛💚💙🩵💜🤎🖤🩶🤍 Equality... everyone gets the same Equity... recognises difference and allocates resource accordingly. Race Equality Week begins today! Each day this week we will share with you what race equality means to us at Diversity+. Today's contribution comes from James Cox. 'With this year’s Race Equality Week theme being #ListenActChange I feel that it is crucial to be inquisitive and show genuine interest in listening to my peers’ experiences and learning more about their culture. If we don’t ask questions that we might not like the answers to then we will find it hard to act in ways that have impactful change. For me, there is no point in acting without first understanding the real challenges facing our society from people who are best placed to explain this. Sometimes our perception of society is skewed and we don’t fully appreciate things for what they are. To be as best an ally as possible, I will ask those difficult questions. We also must bring those suffering from inequality along with us and give them a safe space to be frank with those of us who cannot really understand reality for them. For me, this is what the meaning of #ListenActChange is. To effect change that has a tangible impact we must first engage in dialogue with people from different backgrounds to understand what they need. As we then introduce action, it is crucial to continue to get input from as diverse an audience as possible.' Thank you James 🙏 Share what race equality means to you. Day 4 of Race Equality Week, today's topic is a culture of belonging. What does it mean to belong? Who's responsibility is it to make a person feel that way? Belonging is a key component of inclusion, and it can be hard sometimes to feel a sense of belonging if you're the only ethnic minority in a room particularly if you have additional protected characteristics, so how do we work to make each and every member feel welcome and that they belong? The BRC took part in Race Equality Week 2024! This was implemented across the whole organisation and our teams and colleagues took part in the 5 day challenge. Proud to say I helped organise the week and developed forms for the 5 day challenges so everyone across our organisation could take part. I also championed and led the week for the South East. Involving everyone in these challenges enables us to identify and see much-needed shifts in beliefs, cultures, behaviours and outcomes for race equality Race Equality Week by Race Equality Matters is such a great initiative, it really helps to make a change and starts difficult conversations. While it can be difficult and uncomfortable to discuss issues of race, it's important that the conversations continue to take place. This will allow for the discomfort to ease in time and for progress to be made towards racial parity. Feeling thankful for being recognised organisation-wide!
