Last week, Primary Care for America hosted #PrimaryCare24, bringing together healthcare thought leaders, innovators and experts to discuss the importance of Primary Care. Our physician partner, Brady Steineck MD, MBA of Community Health Care, Inc., talked about the importance of long-term, trusting relationships between patients and their PCPs, and how value-based care supports and enhances those relationships. “When you ask patients who they want to see when they get sick, it’s us [their primary care team],” despite other options available to them. Enhancing patient experience by improving access to high-quality, continuous primary care is one of the biggest challenges facing the profession, but value-based care enables PCPs to transform their practices to do just that. Embracing technology and AI is vital here, joining up services and eliminating confusion for society’s most vulnerable – ensuring no one goes without the care they need. ⏰ Hours per GP session up while session number falls It’s not just you: your sessions are getting longer. A new study from Manchester University researchers has concluded that GPs pack in a full-time complement of 37.5 hours in just six sessions. We all understand intuitively that GPs are working more than ever before, so to have empirical research showing this suggests that existing ways of measuring capacity are not fit for purpose. It also goes a long to explain why so many GPs may feel they’ve already worked a full week by Wednesday evening. With plenty of fully-qualified GPs more than ready to step in to support GP practices in locum roles, it’s time for policy makers, guided by Manchester University’s other research into the high quality clinical cover already delivered by GP locums, to immediately and fully incorporate GP locums into its existing workforce plans.
