Has Mastering Linux Boosted Your Career Beyond Tier 1 Roles? Answers: https://lnkd.in/gGvVHefg #Linux #CareerGrowth #TechCommunity Hey everyone! 👋 I've been doing some digging around my workplace about Linux, and I’m curious about how it really impacts career growth. It seems like I’m not the only one wondering—almost no one in our Tier 2/3 teams, or even in the SOC, has much experience with it. So, I have to ask: **For those of you who have made it past Tier 1:** - **How essential has Linux been for your career advancement?** - **Did you find that knowledge of Linux led to more job opportunities or better roles?** - **Is it as vital as I thought, or could I be overestimating its importance?** 🤔 From what I've gathered, Linux is often seen as a foundational skill in tech. Here are a few points that popped into my mind: - **Industry Relevance:** Linux powers a huge percentage of servers and cloud platforms, so understanding it could open doors. 🚪 - **Flexibility:** It’s a versatile OS that’s used in a range of environments—from servers to embedded systems. - **Community and Support:** There’s a vast community and many res...

𝓜𝓪𝓬𝓞𝓢 𝓿𝓮𝓻𝓼𝓾𝓼 𝓦𝓲𝓷𝓭𝓸𝔀𝓼 - A $17,000 Assurance The MacBooks versus Windows laptops debate has been raging for decades, but is there a clear winner? MacOS operating system offers seamless integration with apples laptops & desktops, raising the bar for synergy between software and hardware. On the other hand, Windows laptops offer a wide range of options from various manufacturers, providing users with greater flexibility in terms of hardware specifications, design preferences, and budget. Windows laptops often provide better customization options, allowing users to personalize their devices according to their specific needs. They also tend to offer a wider variety of ports and connectivity options, making them suitable for individuals who rely on multiple peripherals or need to connect to different types of devices. Ultimately, the decision between Apple and Windows laptops boils down to personal preference and specific requirements. Both options have their strengths and weaknesses. Whether it’s Apple or Windows, laptop hardware problems and viruses can disrupt project deadlines. When you hire someone to accomplish programming tasks, you should not have to be concerned with their programming equipment or code backup procedures to complete those jobs. Besides the hardware backup, all software, and development programs ( #crestron #amx #baimp #iOS #qsc #extron ) are backed up across several protected platforms. #Microsoft has patched a method that allowed users to bypass the #TPM 2.0 #hardware requirement and install Windows 11 on unsupported #PCs using older #CPUs. This workaround, which involved a simple command line trick during the #OS installation, enabled many users with CPUs like the Athlon and Core2Duo to upgrade to Windows 11. However, the latest Windows 11 Insider Build 27686 (#Dilithium) has blocked this method, making it more difficult for users with unsupported hardware to install the latest OS. Microsoft is gradually phasing out older operating systems, and this change may force affected users to either upgrade their hardware, revert to Windows 10, or switch to alternative operating systems like #Linux. https://lnkd.in/gNmkD5RH

Why I no longer prefer a Mac as a daily dev machine. (haters gonna hate, whatever) During my long and somewhat successful software development career I went thru many iterations of development machines. Prior to 2008 or so I had used combination of Linux desktops and Windows (when I could not avoid it). Once I got my first Macbook ("aluminium" pro), I thought I would never look back. OS X was real Unix and it was light-weight. Unfortunately, Snow Leopard was the last time #Apple innovated in operating system space and Mac hardware went downhill since then. Meanwhile Microsoft embraced Linux and with WSL and Terminal app it is rapidly approaching ideal software developer's setup. Windows 11 can even run Linux GUI via X server. My current daily driver is a M2 Mac Mini. My daily experience is akin what Windows experience was 20 years ago. From my POV, the state of Mac OS today is pretty sorry one. - muddy virtualization. There is no easy and free way to virtualize. Parallels and VMware do not have free option and/or require account with them. They mine your data like there is no tomorrow. Things like OrbStack do a good job faking docker but require custom Linux kernel so you can't just install whatever you want. QEMU sort of works but requires fishing for secret incantations all over the internet. - artificially crippled video output. My ancient Windows box could run 4 monitors, 3 of them in 4K. Current Macbooks can do what, one? My Mac Mini can do 2. Anything more requires fantastically more expensive hardware. - same for memory. Apple marketing's stance on memory is complete BS. It is Unix and memory allocation works the same, no miracle. That includes BS about shared video memory akin to "Netbook" from 2004. I upgraded my Mini to 16GB, it is ok-ish then, but for its cost I could get a (used) Windows box with 96GB, dual Xeon with 16 cores and dedicated Nvidia card(s) that would not restrict me to one way of doing things. - never ending multi-gigabyte software updates. Every little thing every few days and another reboot. - less Unix-y everyday. My work requires setting up complex networking for testing. Mac OS uses standard dnsmasq for DHCP and DNS. Except, they no longer use standard config files for that. Files are still there and you can update them and it takes place but then they 'd be overridden back to defaults at random time. The true location of this config data is unknown. And this trend is with everything. - almost-daily crashes that seem to be caused by what was plugged in at the time it went to sleep. Also very much like Windows did 20 years ago. - poor integration with 3rd party software. It seems like _nothing_ works properly on Mac. - Apple software is not much better. There was update to iMovie (which I do not use but can't uninstall) that took 100% of one of the cores for a _week_. - Finder is as sclerotic as leading presidential candidates of 2024. It is slow, it does not remember where it has been, it keels over network, etc
