Two years ago, on this day, I was entering uncharted territory and feeling all the emotions. It was weeks before launch and I swayed between "what if we sell out overnight?" and "what if no one likes the product?" None of those things happened. An organic launch requires patience, but also requires a community who LOVES your product enough to tell their friends, family & coworkers. Word-of-mouth is what brought us to where we are today. ✨ Yet, two years later, I still feel those emotions swaying between "what if this happens?" and "what if this doesn't happen?" I've learned that growing a brand and loyal community isn't always linear. We're following that north star. It doesn't matter what the actual path itself looks like, we know where we're going. Last weekend at #SXSW2024 our chief strategy officer, Chris Plating, spoke on a panel with Ben & Jerry's, Worth Rises, and the National Religious Campaign Against Torture to share how brands, activists, and advertisers can join forces for good. They explained the relationship these types of organizations can and should cultivate to create change in the world — and helped the audience understand why Advertising for Impact matters. Here are three key takeaways: - Powerful Companies = Powerful Pull: With bigger platforms, louder voices, and immense people-power, companies bear real weight in the public realm. When they take a stand, people listen. We need companies to advocate for causes they care about and act as the voice of the people who have long been invisible. - Creativity Can Illuminate the Cause: Advertisers are some of the most creative thinkers on the planet. They know how to turn heads, open eyes, and spark conversation. We need agencies to use their tools and talents to point people to more than just products. They can act as flashlights that illuminate activist causes, which so often exist in the dark. - Every Brand, Agency, and Person Has Something to Offer: Brands and agencies, when you come to the activist table, come with an abundance mentality. We all have something to offer the causes we care about. Whether it’s a deep understanding of impact-marketing or simply the ability to create a well-executed social post, activists can use what you can offer.    Taking action isn’t always easy, but we firmly believe that it’s always worth it. Golden Hour Skincare, founded in 2021 by best friends Bonolo Matjila and Patience Kunene, serves as a beacon of inspiration for young Black women and women everywhere. Their mission to disrupt the beauty industry with environmentally sustainable, gender-inclusive skincare products showcases their innovative spirit and commitment to excellence. Matjila and Kunene identified a market gap and used their expertise in law and tax law to drive strategic development and manage finances. Facing significant challenges in raising capital, they persevered and successfully secured R3.5 million in startup funding through development programs. Their journey, marked by resilience and determination, should inspire the African Black child to dream big, work tirelessly, and never give up. Golden Hour Skincare stands out by focusing on skin concerns rather than gender, using high-quality ingredients with proven efficacies, and prioritizing sustainable packaging. The company is transitioning to 100% recyclable and refillable packaging, with plans to eventually use post-consumer recycled plastics. Imagine a future where more young women direct their energies towards benefiting themselves and their economy, challenging themselves to eradicate poverty. Don’t wait for the crisis. If you’ve lost someone dear, been through a major health scare or are experiencing intensely the state of the world (e.g. climate crisis, wars, injustice), you’ve likely been tossed onto a roller coaster to address the crisis, and search deeper for meaning and purpose. Why wait for the crisis to hit? It's time to stop using our life to just "get by" and be really serious about the type of impact you want to have. Know that your impact can be more deeply woven with your purpose. When oriented to something you really care about, your impact is connected to meaningful work and a meaningful life - according to researchers Lips-Wiersma & Morris, 2009 and Michaelson & Tosti-Kharas, 2020. Meaningful work provides fulfillment and psychological well-being (Berg et al., 2010). "Authenticity is about making sure what we do is based on the clarity of where we have come from and transparency on where we are right now. Ambition is about setting our sights on actions which are rooted in what we know is needed – what the science (both physical and social sciences) says is needed, rather than being limited by what feels possible. It’s also about being held accountable for that ambition. Agency is about empowering people - workers, customers, supply chain partners - to take action. This is about how you inspire the desire in people to act. And even more importantly, it’s about transferring the power and creating the tools to enable people to get things done. Activism is about engaging with those involved in social movements, even when it feels uncomfortable, leaning in and listening. Allyship is the final A, and it is about partnering through alliances and collaboration. The word ally is important as it is a reference to the work of the social justice movements.
