Electricity + caffeine = customer growth Or so that's what Starbucks seems to be thinking. One of the hesitations about an electric 🚗 I've had and have heard from others is the ease and location of charging far(ther) from home, especially when charging areas aren't at a location designed for a quick stop. Placing charging stations at a known entity intended to be a pit stop 🏁 would certainly draw me in during a short road trip. Curious to see when or if others follow the lead or if available infrastructure for chargers becomes a draw for site selection.

Existing propositions for motorists are not new. Service stations are 118 years old, supermarkets are 105 years old, motorway services are 64 years old and drive-thrus are 48 years old. So a key and provocative question is – how could charging stations use the advantage of new innovations in tech and design to produce propositions that disrupt the huge markets sat on by these formats? When a company becomes the size of Starbucks, I would argue that they have a responsibility to set standards to leave the next generation in a better place. ☕Starbucks has certified 6,091 “Greener Stores” in the past year; on its way to 10,000 stores globally by 2025. 5,488 of these locations are in North America. For perspective, Starbucks (as of 2023) has 38,038 locations worldwide. 10,000 locations or approx. 25% is a significant portion of the store base. ☕The ultimate goal is to reduce carbon emissions, water usage and landfill waste by 50% by 2030. ☕Starbucks partnered with the World Wildlife Fund and SCS Global Services to set standards across eight impact areas including (but not limited to) water stewardship, energy efficiency, waste diversion, renewable energy, and responsible materials to certify by third-party verification as a “Greener Store.” ☕The U.S. Greener Store of the Year is a 100-year-old house that was converted into a café in Williamsburg, VA. It operates on 100% renewable electricity from the Fern Solar project.
