This summer, I was informed that 7 of my 8 academic books are now published by BLOOMSBURY Publishing - an international publisher with offices in New York, London, New Delhi, Oxford, and Sydney. I am super-excited and ecstatic that the books that I worked so hard for over 25 years in writing, researching, and using as textbooks in my undergraduate and graduate classes today, now have an INTERNATIONAL and GLOBAL publisher! My seven books are as follows: (1) Race and Ethnic Relations on Campus: Discovering New Solutions (2018), (2) The New Face of America: How the Emerging, Multiracial, Multiethnic Majority is Changing the United States (2013), (3) The Cultural Rights Movement: Fulfilling the Promise of Civil Rights for African Americans (2010), (4) Black America, Body Beautiful: How the African American Image is Changing Fashion, Fitness, and Other Industries (2008), (5) Food Choice and Obesity in Black America: Creating a New Cultural Diet (2006), (6) African American Alternative Medicine: Using Alternative Medicine to Prevent and Control Chronic Diseases (2002), and (7) Medical Anthropology and African American Health (2000). Therefore throughout this entire year and beginning August 1st, I will be recognizing my new book publisher - BLOOMSBURY Publishing - and encourage everyone to check out ONE or ALL of my books because they maybe of interest to you or your network of colleagues! As a joint-appointed Professor in Anthropology and Public Health at ECU, yesterday I participated in the OPEN HOUSE event with my Anthropology colleagues so that we could meet all the new Anthropology majors, Anthropology graduate students, and all ECU students interested in the field of Anthropology. It was a very successful gathering of students, faculty, and staff. After all the faculty introduced ourselves, it was meet and greet with the students along with playing games and eating a little food. Check out a few photos from the OPEN HOUSE held at the Flanagan Bldg on the main campus of East Carolina University! Time to KICK-OFF the new academic year in the Department of Anthropology and ECU! #ecu #eastcarolinauniversity #departmentofanthropology #anthropology #ecudepartmentofanthropology #drb

This week, I finally have time to work on one of my DRAFT articles related to the next phase of a research project that I completed this past year. I would like to get some FEEDBACK from my LinkedIn audience as to whether the topic of this research study and the potential journal article would be of interest to you, your colleagues, and the general public. Please share your thoughts, comments, and suggestions. Thanks! #covid19 #collegestudents #mentalhealth #mentalhealthcopingstrategies #covid19vaccines #publichealth

It's August 2nd and now I can finally reflect back on my Summer 11 week course entitled, "Capstone Experience in Ethnic Health & Health Disparities: MPH 6009" which finished last week! This Capstone course and the Capstone Paper (which is a Fieldwork Proposal) is the culmination of the ERHD courses in our program in which graduate public health and medical students are strongly encouraged to re-examine our current public health and medical systems in order to provide their CREATIVE, INNOVATIVE, and CULTURALLY-COMPETENT strategies in their final paper that can improve the lives of SPECIFIC ETHNIC and RURAL HEALTH DISPARITY populations in the United States and especially in Eastern NC! Every year, I am AMAZED and pleasantly SURPRISED of the professional quality of their papers, the passion to their health disparity issue, the commitment to their specific population, and the deeper understanding of these complicated health disparity issues in which many graduate public health and medical students do not get the opportunity to investigate during their graduate professional training. So here are the TITLES of the CAPSTONE Fieldwork Proposals that my graduate public health and medical students from Brody School of Medicine completed during this summer's MPH 6009 course: "Opioid Epidemic Crisis among Incarcerated Males" "The Perpetuation of Obesity in the United States" "Improving Awareness of the Challenges Experienced by Children with Complex Medical Needs" "Health Disparities in Pediatric Type 2 Diabetes Diagnosis" "Addressing Rural-Urban Disparities in Infrastructure and Capacity to Address Health Needs: Implications for Primary Care, Trauma Care, and OB/GYN Care in Rural Areas" "Mental Health Disparities among Ethnic Minority Populations in Eastern North Carolina" "Hands-On Health Education": A Physio Camp Initiative for Early Childhood Healthy Lifestyle Development" "Diabetes Prevention Program: Educating & Empowering the Adults of Pitt County on Managing Type 2 Diabetes" "Employability Program for People Experiencing Homelessness" "Investigating Medical Interpretation for Limited English Proficiency, Spanish-Speaking Patients at Safety Net Clinics in Eastern North Carolina" "Capstone Experience in Ethnic Health & Health Disparity: Substance Use and Misuse" Again, it was my HONOR and complete JOY to have these phenomenal young professionals in our ERHD program for the past 2 years. They will join the next cohort of ERHD graduates who will change the WORLD! #erhd #healthdisparities #ruralhealthdisparities #ruralhealth #ecu #departmentofpublichealth #brodyschoolofmedicine

In preparation for the upcoming academic year (2024-2025) at East Carolina University, I felt that I needed some new Business cards since I have not had any for almost 14 years. (I have been employed at ECU for the past 19 years.) Indeed, I realize that a majority of folks do not use business cards as much anymore, but it does make a difference when you're attending conferences or meeting new professionals at your respective university. In fact, I STILL have my business cards from all the institutions that I have worked for as a professional since 1988 starting at the University of Houston. So as a joint-appointed professor at ECU, here are my NEW BUSINESS CARDS highlighting my Ethnic and Rural Health Disparities (ERHD) Graduate Certificate Online Program, the Department of Public Health, and the Department of Anthropology. So what do you think about it? Look forward to your response.

It's July 1st and now I can look back at my Summer I East Carolina University graduate course which lasted 5 1/2 weeks entitled, "African American Health: MPH 6005," to assess how my graduate students performed. A vast majority of my graduate public health and medical students in this class performed BETTER than expected! Since I have been teaching this graduate course in our Department of Public Health for the past 18 years, the graduate students in this class continue to EXCEL each year. I am pleasantly surprised on their eagerness and commitment to dive deep into a wide array of African American health and medical issues that I present through my podcast/webcast lectures, readings, discussion board sessions, and online videos! Of course, I do my BEST to present all of the African American health issues as OBJECTIVELY as possible yet with a bit of CULTURAL insight that I have as an African American individual and scholar in the field practically all of my life! To illustrate the type of research projects or proposals that my graduate students completed for this African American Health course, check out some of the TITLES: "African American Health Proposal: Tobacco Use & Health Consequences amongst African Americans" "Fieldwork Proposal/Project: Obesity among African Americans" "The Prevalence of Diabetes in African Americans: Mobile, Alabama" "Proposal for Project on Mental Health and Mental Health Care Barriers among African Americans in Raleigh, NC" "The Existence of Mental Illness in African Americans: Depression, Anxiety, and Panic Disorder" "A Needs Assessment of the African American Community in Martin County, North Carolina" "Breaking the Chains: Transforming Type II Diabetes Care in African American Communities" "Dementia among African Americans" "Culture, Diabetes, and Health Outcomes among African Americans" "Improving Diabetes Outcomes in the African American Community Proposal Project" "The Prevalence and Impact of Cardiovascular Disease among African Americans" "A Cultural Health Assessment on the Mental Health Status, Awareness, and Services for African Americans in South Florida" "Substance Abuse and Mental Health within the African American Population" "Applied Medical Anthropologic/Public Health Fieldwork Proposal: Determinants of Healthcare Related to HIV Care and Prevention Within the African American Community" "The Temple of God: Faith and Religion's Influence on Health in African American Communities" "Enhancing African American Breastfeeding Rates in the United States" "Uncontrolled Hypertension among African American Patients" Hopefully now you can see that our current graduate public health and medical students are very much INTERESTED, EXCITED, INTRIGUED, CURIOUS, and COMMITTED in wanting to learn more and to do their part regardless of their individual background with respect to African American health! It definitely makes me feel good to teach this MPH 6005 African American Health course!
