The Albanese government’s caps, due to come into effect on January 1 depending on legislation being passed, are part of a suite of measures designed to reduce overseas net migration to 250,000 by July next year. The analysis of 154 higher education and 275 vocational providers by consultant and former regulator Claire Field found that 10 providers, including NIDA, had allocations that exceeded their determination under the government register, known as CRICOS. Those 10 have been allocated 1183 places for new students in 2025, even though under their CRICOS cap they can only enrol a maximum of 598 new and ongoing students. The Queensland School of Film and TV, for example, received a cap of 30, but under CRICOS it can enrol only 20 students a year. Is this simply political rhetoric, similar to what we've seen in many countries before elections, or is there a deeper rationale behind this move? Many stakeholders in the industry are still grappling with this million-dollar question. Only time will tell how this will unfold for institutions across Australia and its impact on stakeholders worldwide.

Today, the California Department of Education certified the First Principal Apportionment (P-1) for fiscal year (FY) 2023–24 totaling $51,635,949,056! I'd like to thank the School Fiscal Services Division for the heavy lifting to make this happen and make it look so seamless. As part of the P-1 , we are including nearly $1 billion in Prop 28 funding to support Arts & Music programs as approved by voters among other programs to benefit California's nearly six million students. The following provides specific details regarding the calculation of funding for each Principal Apportionment component.

Congratulations to Andrew Lewer for raising awareness on the issues involved in the proposed changes to VAT and Business Rates for Independent and Private Schools. I look forward to reading the Hansard Record of the debate Fundamentally this will become a whole sector issue if this proposed disruption is occurs. This will impact on all families, schools and communities. Instead of disruption Headteachers and School Governors from across the education sector need to take the lead and demonstrate how granting charitable status for some schools can be evaluated and earned. This needs to be centrally assessed and since it is the independent / private schools that are most under threat they should probably be taking the lead but not as lone voices but as a collective working with groups of Heads and Governors from across the sector. I want to hear the voice of a collective cross-sector group of Headteachers saying that they will work with any Government to improve the social impact that schools can have on their communities and particularly on those on Free School Meals and Pupils Premium. That positive strategy should be communicated currently. We need to demonstrate how well the two sectors work together. I have seen this throughout my working life in education and charity. Disruption will harm the whole of the sector. I do not want to be a lone voice #PARENTSUPINARMS #SCHOOLSUPINARMS #HEADTEACHERSUPINARMS
Andrew Lewer asked the House of Commons to consider independent school fees and VAT, which prompted a debate that was held yesterday. "For many people, when they hear the terms 'independent school' or 'private school', they immediately associate them with elitism, isolation and privilege. Nothing could be further from the truth. Independent schools today are modern, diverse and inclusive places that often provide education and specialist provision where the state sector does not go. Furthermore, independent schools are more connected to society now than ever before, working with the state sector in partnerships and widening access through bursaries." Facilities like this should be available to every child. We’re spending a couple of days at Benenden School, supporting our children at a performance. This place has **incredible** facilities. Seriously - it’s like an American university. The kinds of buildings, grounds, and technology people from my sort of educational background perhaps never see or have access to. (my school’s “music technology suite” was a windowless cupboard equipped with an ancient Atari ST and a CASIO keyboard) Our national conversation around education shouldn’t be making these things ever more the privilege of the wealthy (that’s what adding VAT to fees will do)… We should be talking about: - how we build more of them - everywhere - for everyone —— #education #educationpolicy #generalelection #ukelection #ge2024 #aspire
