Has luxury lost its luster? 💎 Looking to luxury is not always about extracting what works well. The dangerous games some companies are currently playing holds lessons for any brand. Chanel, for instance, raised the price of its classic handbags from $6,000 to over $10,000 in just a few years. Without any notable improvement in quality, leaving customers wondering: Is luxury still worth it? And demand is dropping. Bargain hunters are flocking to luxury stores, hoping to capitalize on deals as prices fluctuate. In short, it’s poison for luxury. What is happening? At its core, the luxury market is shifting. Consumers increasingly want more than just status symbols. They want brands that stand for something real. Meaning, ethics, transparency, and authenticity are not optional; they're essential. A case in point is Hermès, which continues to thrive by delivering on its DNA of quality and craftsmanship, while others falter by cutting corners. Here’s what we can take from this: ⭐️ Don’t stretch – clients can tell when they’re being overcharged ⭐️ Be genuine – real value comes from honesty and staying true to your DNA ⭐️ Purpose matters – people want brands that align with their values Stay tuned for the final and concluding edition of my Elegant Insights LinkedIn Newsletter - and what we can learn from luxury: 👉🏻 Subscribe here: https://lnkd.in/dZ6jyPXE This will be edition #12 of #12. Executive Creative Director @ Interbrand | BA Hons, Mentor, Creative awards judge and speaker, Ambassador for inclusion and equality in the design industry. Member of WACL'24
Creativity at the Core: Evolving Narratives in Luxury Playful. Disruptive. Antagonistic. Exquisite. Machine-learnt, Hand-made. Rule-breaking. Traditional. The luxury sector embodies a tapestry of paradoxes, where traditional and modern elements coexist seamlessly. At its core, creativity drives this ever-evolving field, catering to a demanding audience that craves originality, exceptionality, and innovation. This dynamism is evident when brands merge the unexpected or reinterpret their identities—like TAG Heuer's chase with Carrera or Burberry's collaboration with Norman’s café, such initiatives illustrate the luxury sector’s vibrant creative landscape. Our own #BestGlobalBrands report shows significant growth in the luxury sector value increasing by 6.5% outpacing other industries - seeing brands like BUGATTI bring new-found attitude and experience to the brand is shaking up the luxury codes with work done by our own Interbrand Cologne team. The introduction of prestigious Luxury award categories at Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity underscores this evolution, maintaining a connection to tradition even as the sector reinvents itself. And the grand Prix winner The tale of Loewe x Suna Fujita is another great example. When I joined Interbrand, I read 'Meta-luxury' by Rebecca Robins and Manfredi Ricca, Global Chief Strategy Officer, Interbrand, which emphasised creativity's role in luxury. They argue that true luxury—Meta-Luxury—is based on excellence and authenticity rather than mere opulence, with its foundations in Rarity, Focus, Craftsmanship, and History. These Pillars remain profoundly relevant in today's luxury landscape, albeit with evolved interpretations to meet contemporary demands. Rarity today is expressed through groundbreaking creativity, as seen in Kaguya by Gucci, a modern take on the ancient Japanese tale 'Taketori Monogatari', celebrating 75 yrs. of their iconic bamboo bags. Focus has shifted from narrowing brand activities to passing on a legacy of creativity. This evolution is visible from Tom Ford to Sabato De Sarno at Gucci, where there's a seamless yet innovative transition. Craftsmanship now extends beyond traditional skills to collaborative storytelling, enhancing both product and brand narrative. This broader interpretation includes the burgeoning pre-owned market. With 64% of Gen Z preferring second-hand items and over 65% in China engaging in second-hand shopping there’s a clear shift towards sustainable luxury. And history, this has always been about understanding the past to better inform the future – what was once possible and is now surpassable. Thus, Meta-Luxury transcends conventional luxury, allowing for a creative renaissance that is now celebrated globally, including at Cannes Lions. This is a testament to the enduring allure and power of creativity in luxury. #iconicmoves #luxury #reinvention

When I tell people that I launched a fashion brand and operate in the luxury business, I often encounter a common misconception. 👎🏻 Many associate luxury solely with material possessions and extravagance. However, there is an extreme humility in the world of luxury, especially among those who work within it. They understand that true luxury is not about owning material things. It’s about cherishing what money can’t buy—health, family, friends, and the intangible moments that bring genuine happiness and fulfillment. Many are unable to understand this, and that’s why they might also miss the true value of luxury, which is to appreciate the extraordinary art of craftsmanship. The dedication, skill, and passion that go into creating high-quality items are what truly define luxury. Which side are you on? Do you recognize the true value of luxury, and where do you think it lies, or do you view it differently? #CapriceBespoke #LuxuryRedefined #TrueLuxury #FashionIndustry #Craftsmanship #MadeinItaly CAPRICE BESPOKE®

State of the Luxury Industry: "The big question is whether the current downturn is a shorter-term cyclical shift, or a longer-term structural cataclysm that will require the luxury sector to make fundamental changes to its business model. The combination of customer resistance to dramatic price increases amid declining quality and ongoing questions about industry ethics and sustainability have dented the perceived value of big brand luxury."
