As we strive to create inclusive and supportive environments at PCOS Awareness Association, it's important to raise awareness about health issues impacting our community. PCOS is more than just a reproductive concern; it can affect mental health, increase the risk of diabetes, and pose challenges to daily life. By fostering understanding and empathy, we can offer better support to those navigating these challenges. We encourage our community to learn more about PCOS and consider how we can collectively create awareness and support for those affected. Discrimination and stigma often prevent people of color from identifying that we or someone we love is dealing with disordered eating. To many, it may still feel like struggling with food is a “white girl” issue; this is simply not true. Eating disorders affect people of color at high rates. Among those that do present with an eating disorder, only 17% of Black women and 41% of Latinas are accurately diagnosed by doctors when presenting with an eating disorder (source at the end). As a wealthy nation, Canada has all the resources necessary to meaningfully and measurably improve children’s health and wellbeing, but what will it take? And, where should we prioritize investments to yield greatest impact? “ – Children’s Healthcare Canada.   This week, Angelo Mikrogianakis, Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at McMaster University and Chief of Pediatrics at McMaster Children’s Hospital joined child health leaders from across the country to discuss solutions. April is Parkinson’s awareness month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about this neurological disorder. Parkinson’s disease affects movement, causing symptoms like tremors, stiffness, and difficulty with balance. It can also lead to non-motor symptoms such as mood changes, sleep disturbances, and cognitive issues. So how can we care for loved ones living with Parkinson’s disease? Today I will share with you 5 tips on how to care for a loved one with Parkinson’s disease, written from the perspective of someone with Parkinson’s: 1. Understand My Symptoms: Please take the time to understand my symptoms and how they may change over time. This knowledge will help you provide the right support and assistance when I need it most. 2. Encourage Independence: While I may need help with certain tasks, please encourage me to remain independent as much as possible. Simple modifications and aids can make a big difference in maintaining my autonomy. 3. Create a Safe Environment: Ensure that our home environment is safe and accessible for me. This includes removing tripping hazards, installing handrails, and making adjustments to accommodate any mobility challenges. 4. Communication is Key: Clear and open communication is crucial. Please listen to my concerns, ask questions, and involve me in decision-making regarding my care and treatment plans. 5. Offer Emotional Support: Parkinson’s can be emotionally challenging, so your understanding, patience, and emotional support mean everything to me. November is 🗓️ National Family Caregiver Month We're recognizing the 1️⃣ in 3️⃣ American Adults who serve as an informal or family caregiver (Mayo Clinic). 54 Million family caregivers provide unpaid care in the U.S. - an estimated $470 billion economic value (National Council on Aging). 📈According to Mayo Clinic, caregivers report experiencing stress at higher levels than those who are not caregivers. Caregiver stress results in reported anxiety, fatigue, trouble sleeping, substance abuse, depression, weight and mood fluctuations. How to cope with caregiver stress: 🤲 Ask for help. 🤲 Seek mental health care. 🤲 Join caregiver support groups. 🤲 Keep tabs on your physical health by keeping up with regular health screenings.
