Juneteenth marks the day enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally received news of their freedom. It's a day of celebration, but also a stark reminder of the long road to equality. Freedom for some did not mean freedom for all. The legacy of slavery continues to shape our nation, and the fight for true justice continues today. We must acknowledge the past, its pain, and its resilience. We must use this day to reflect on the ongoing struggle for racial equity. How can we be better allies? How can we dismantle the systems that perpetuate inequality? Let Juneteenth be a day of resolve. We recognize that the fight for freedom, equality, and justice extends to all aspects of life, including addressing the disproportionate impact of sexual violence on black survivors. Juneteenth represents the emancipation of enslaved African Americans, marking a pivotal moment in our nation’s history. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that systemic racism and its interconnections persist, contributing to the disparities faced by black individuals, including survivors of sexual violence. Studies have shown that black survivors disproportionately experience sexual violence, often facing unique challenges when seeking support and justice. At PAAR, we are committed to amplifying their voices, advocating for their rights, and providing a safe space where healing and empowerment can occur. We encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect on the intersection of racial injustice and sexual violence. Let us use this Juneteenth as an opportunity to deepen our understanding, have difficult conversations, and support survivors in their healing journeys. Recently, I’ve been asked how it feels to be a Black woman building a radical justice space with a White woman. I want to share a couple of aspects about how Erin Allgood and I understand solidarity and community. 🔔 Abolition and Liberation work is the work of All people. We are all inherently bound to one another. In order for one of us to be fully liberated- we ALL have to be fully liberated. 🔔 The unspoken requirement that this type of social labor is only viable in the hands of BIPOC is harmful and takes growth, sustainable change, and accountability away from those who hold dominant identities. It is a perpetuation of stolen labor for the benefit of whiteness and we reject that perpetuation. 🔔 This work (DEI, justice, liberation work or whatever you want to call it) has historically been done on the back of queer Black women. The partnership we have built allows my lived expereinces and expertise to shine, while offering me a reprive from always putting my identities and personhood on the line. That is what allyship is and the cosmos has seen fit to gift me a true selfless ally in this space. #DEI #Justice #RadicalJustice #Community #antiracism
