Today we celebrate Brown v Board of Education, but our schools are approaching segregation rates we haven’t seen since 1968. This is why new schools, like Madison’s South Elementary— that EQT is proud to have taken part in creating— are vital. It is the same with addressing the history of redlining in Wisconsin. EQT knows we can’t return to the days before Civil Rights, so lets stand tall in defending diversity and investment in our students. https://lnkd.in/gYDh3UTS #EducationEquity

How we'll get to integration and education equity: We've worked with fellow education justice advocates to craft a thoughtful strategy for ushering in an era where every student has a fair and equal shot at quality education. Our approach combines state policy changes, comprehensive research, and proactive advocacy. Why does this matter? History shows us that these tools are incredibly effective. For instance, 12 years of court-ordered desegregation dramatically narrowed the Black/white education gap - until the late 80s when rapid desegregation followed the court's loosened oversight. Transforming our schools into reflections of the diversity of our country is necessary for a healthy democracy. We are fighting for schools that are not only diverse but also rich in resources and opportunities, where every student can thrive. Dive into our roadmap linked below, and stay tuned for our detailed research and state policy agendas soon! https://lnkd.in/g9vt3EQz

Throwback Thursday: The Journey of Desegregation in Schools On this Throwback Thursday, let's reflect on a pivotal chapter in American history: the desegregation of schools from the 1950s to the 1970s. This era marked a profound transformation in our society, shaping the educational landscape we know today. The journey began with the landmark Supreme Court case, Brown v. Board of Education in 1954. The Court's unanimous decision declared that "separate educational facilities are inherently unequal," overturning the infamous "separate but equal" doctrine established by Plessy v. Ferguson. This ruling set the stage for desegregation, challenging deeply ingrained racial divides. However, the path to integration was neither swift nor smooth. Across the nation, many schools and communities resisted change. It took the courage and perseverance of civil rights activists, students, and parents to push for enforcement. Notable moments include the Little Rock Nine in 1957, where nine African American students faced hostile crowds to integrate Central High School in Arkansas, under the protection of federal troops. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, further legislation and court orders were necessary to dismantle segregation fully. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 and subsequent Supreme Court rulings reinforced the mandate for equal educational opportunities, ensuring that the principles set forth in Brown v. Board of Education were implemented nationwide. Desegregation was a crucial step toward equality, promoting diverse and inclusive environments that benefit all students. As we look back, we honor those who fought tirelessly for justice and remember that the pursuit of equity in education continues. Their legacy reminds us of the power of resilience and the importance of standing up for what is right. Let's continue to build on this legacy, ensuring that every student has access to the quality education they deserve. #CnjAssociates #ThrowbackThursday #Desegregation #EducationEquity #CivilRights

We're less than a month from the 70th anniversary of the landmark Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision, yet racial and socio-economic segregation in schools remains a persistent issue. Thank you, Congressman Bobby Scott, for your leadership in calling for a hearing to address this ongoing problem. We must address school segregation now. Progress towards meaningful school integration has been resisted since the decision, and we must acknowledge some important missteps along the way, but we know this strategy benefits all students. Racial and economic segregation is a widespread problem in schools despite research consistently showing that diverse schools have positive academic and social outcomes for students. https://lnkd.in/gXMjprbj

House Bill 1363 in #Colorado seeks to undermine the state's successful public charter schools, which primarily serve marginalized and low income students. HB1363 gives veto power to unelected citizens, strips authority from CO's Board of Ed, and threatens the very existence of public charter schools. We stand against this harmful bill and urge its quick defeat for the sake of students' access to quality education. #StopHB1363 #EdReform https://lnkd.in/dXUq2AYy

Today we want to highlight the commendable work of Executive Director Tim Saintsing, who led a collaborative effort to analyze the correlation between academic achievement and the death penalty. The research conducted underscores the disparities within our justice system, revealing a higher likelihood for Black and brown defendants to receive the death penalty compared to their white counterparts. #CriminalJustice #SocialJustice #EducationImpact #KIPP https://lnkd.in/eKdfKgVw

Today marks the 70th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education which struck down racial segregation in America's public schools. But want to know a dirty little secret? By 1965, seven states had enacted private school voucher programs (or "school choice") as a way to avoid desegregation. Over the years they have grown to 26 states with the support of anti-government activists, Christian fundamentalists, the hierarchy of the Catholic Church and others so that "...today most white students attending private schools remain in virtually segregated schools – schools where students of color represent only a token portion of the student population..." This is why vouchers are a racial justice and church-state separation issue. Read more below at Americans United for Separation of Church and State: https://lnkd.in/g4xx6MxG

Vice President of Finance & Controller - My opinions and statements are my own and do not necessarily represent my employer's views.
Greetings, With Missouri State legislation nearly eliminating future DEI training and positions in the education system, it is only a matter of time before other Missouri universities and public schools follow suit. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion equate to common sense, reformation, moral restitution, and courtesies. For many of us, DEI is a way to find community and shared values where one's core identities are confirmed and friendships are found. I am disappointed in our state legislators dividing communities through callous and senseless legislation. More choose to bury their heads in the sand and are willing to ignore long-lasting inequality as it damages their distorted history narrative. https://lnkd.in/gzASvHYr Now more than ever, we need to come together as a nation. Instead of incivilities and insensitivities, let's focus on the real substantive issues and political track records. It's time to engage in constructive dialogue and find common ground. America, wake up and find your sense of morality. #DEI, #bookbans #Racism

Charter schools seem like the education world’s bad boy with a report card full of potential. Three decades in, the shine is wearing off, with critics firing accusations of profiteering and segregation. #CharterSchools Remember the original dream? Community-run schools breaking the mold, igniting innovation, and giving kids a fighting chance? The brightest stars like @chartercollab in the charter universe are still shining. They’re the ones with the multiple accountability measures, the ones empowering communities, the ones obsessed with transforming lives, not lining pockets. Dynamic public education needs renegades AND reformers. The renegades push boundaries, the reformers hold them accountable. So, let’s ditch the misinformation and have a real conversation. Can charters be the future of education? Absolutely, but only if they get back to their roots. Thoughts?🤔 #TheFutureIsNow #PublicEducation #DynamicDuo #AccountabilityWins #EmpoweringEducation #CommunityControl #EducationRevolution #charterschoolsweek #blackeducators https://lnkd.in/eTDVFQ3U

Project 2025, the policy agenda for Former President Trump’s potential first year back in the White House published by the far right conservative think tank the Heritage Foundation, has been making waves recently. Some of the many destructive proposals within the agenda include the elimination of the U.S. Department of Education—along with federal education funding and any civil rights protections—and the diversion of public money to private school voucher programs instead. Make no mistake: The goal is to end public education. But dismantling our public schools isn’t just the plan if Trump is reelected—it is already happening. https://lnkd.in/gY49bKvE #project2025 #democracy #publiceducation #publicschools #education #teachingandlearning #civilrights #privateschools #vouchers
