'Appeal to the heart': Michael Dowling's push to make gun violence a healthcare priority- share your thoughts? In 2019, Michael Dowling began reaching out to peers at other leading health systems to garner support in collectively acknowledging and addressing gun violence as a public health crisis. Few were willing to sign on to such efforts. [Beckers Health Review] "I couldn't get anybody," Mr. Dowling, president and CEO of New York City-based Northwell Health, told Becker's. "They all acknowledged that it was an issue, and they were all very appreciative that I was taking the lead on it. But very few of them wanted to engage." Firearm-related deaths hit an all-time high of nearly 49,000 in 2021 and remain the leading cause of death in children and adolescents. Historically, it was typical and expected for healthcare institutions to shy away from taking a firm stance on controversial political issues. But the tide has begun to turn in the past few years, with a growing pack of prominent voices in healthcare and beyond recognizing and treating gun violence as a nonpolitical health issue. Mr. Dowling has spearheaded efforts to bring health system leaders together around the cause. In 2021, he launched the Gun Violence Prevention Learning Collaborative for Hospitals and Health Systems, which has since convened more than 600 healthcare professionals to discuss strategies on how their organizations are working to prevent gun violence in their communities. Through that effort, more than 40% of members have said they have started or expanded evidence-based prevention strategies at their organizations. The multi-year effort is in its second phase, which involves developing a national repository and dashboard of health systems' firearm injury prevention initiatives. Firearm violence is a devastating chronic problem in the U.S.; I would even classify it as a public health emergency that needs the attention of both Congress and communities. A recent study found that firearms are the leading cause of death in children and adolescents between the ages of 1 and 19 between 2002-2022. If we want to protect future generations from gun violence, we need to take it seriously as a public health issue. We must see past party lines and acknowledge this is a preventable problem. Positive change no matter how small is how change happens. Small things, small steps, progress. Gun violence is not a lost cause. It’s a big issue. Gun violence is the number one cause of death among kids and teens. Secure gun storage is the goal. Guns are not going away, but how we secure them at home is the way to stop accidental deaths among children. What Northwell Health recognized is that gun violence is a public health epidemic. Looking over the horizon, you can see how progress is happening. People get tired, frustrated, it seems unsolvable. Not the case. We are making some positive change. This is about asking the question: what kind of world do we want to live in? In 2021, gun deaths in the U.S. soared to a three-decade high, driven by homicides and suicides. Firearms have become the leading cause of death for children and adolescents ages 1 to 19. 🚨 Firearms are the leading cause of death among children ♦️ 54% of US adults report that they or a family member have experienced a firearms-related injury. ♦️ The rate of firearm suicide rates among children increased 20% across the population-- an access issue. ♦️ 56% of unintentional firearm deaths among children occur at home with 76% with guns left unlocked and 74% left loaded. I had the opportunity to hear Gregory Jackson Jr., Megan Ranney, and Michael Dowling speak last week about the impacts of gun violence a public health crisis. This week the Surgeon General declared gun violence a public health emergency. Like seatbelts and smoking, there are real steps that can be taken to help save lives. A growing number of clinicians and hospital leaders are insisting that the U.S. health care system play a greater role in preventing gun violence in all its forms. The new issue of #TransformingCare highlights the efforts of health care providers to develop a more comprehensive response to the gun violence that continues to plague America. Modeled on effective public health campaigns targeting cigarette smoking and car accidents, these new gun violence prevention efforts focus on screening and surveillance to identify people at risk and reveal patterns of injury. They also develop, test, and evaluate novel approaches to treating gun violence, often in partnership with the communities most affected by it. Other initiatives focus on public awareness and provider education, aiming to make firearm injury prevention an expected part of health care delivery.
